Does anyone know what Dun St PR relates to in 1881 census?

I would be really grateful if anyone can advise if PR is a mis-spelling on census or could it be a poorhouse in Bootle thank you.

The answer to your query is almost certainly yes. Can you post the census page reference where you saw this entry? It will be something like RG 11 / Piece: xxxx / Folio: xx / Page: xx

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I think in this case it means Private House - in face it would seem that Dun St is short for Dundas Street. The next street along, Drake Street is similarly - Pr House 7, etc.

Census ref (1881) is RG11/3690/93/58
Just received my ggrandparents marriage cert - she was a Hartely and family legend is that we are related to Wm Pickles (founder of jam factory) On the census they lived in dun st.

In fact, my mum (who is 81) remembers her grandma (emma hartely) telling of a payment from the Hartelys to my grandad as a child. (she said it was for the "childrens children") Has anyone heard of this? many thanks

I'm sorry I'm not able to help you about the payments.

I looked at the page the Hartleys were on and scrolled backwards to the beginning of the street - Page 29 and it turned out to be the page I originally looked at. The enumerator appears to have been extremely lazy in writing Dun Street all the way through, but the first line has been amended to insert the letters "das" to make Dundas Street.

Hi MaryA and Mojo19,
I am not so sure that Pr means Private house or Private residence. I have looked at several of the summary forms completed by the same enumerator, including streets other than Dun Street and all have the same Pr followed by another 'scrawl' that appears to be the ampersand symbol @ at the top of the page, and then Pr and @ are dittoed on every following line.

I think the letters are 'Pr @', and are an idiosyncrasy of this particular enumerator and they mean 'Present at'.

With regard to the 'children's children' payment I think it was a sort of Victorian philanthropic payment by the company for the benefit of a worker's grandchildren. It was a way of keeping staff 'loyal' and stable.

you have both been very kind to respond and I really appreciate it. I moved away from Liverpool (Bootle) to Glasgow many years ago (tho all my family still there) and this reminds me how good we scousers (and our descendants) are. My mum still convinced we could inherit something from the Hartleys!! kind regards M
