OBITUARIES FROM WIDNES WEEKLY NEWS

Post by egandy »

Hello
I have sent a request by e-mail to the WWN obituaries page to ask for help with a couple of obituaries for my great grandparents. As I live abroad I cannot visit the offices of the newspaper. Unfortunately I received no reply.

Anyone have any experience of the WWN archives or an idea how to proceed?

The obituaries in question regard gggm Mary Stevens of Marsh Street West Bank, who died 26th December 1902 age 79 - date of obituary unknown. Husband William Stevens, my gggf, died 18 June 1898 at “Van Tromp”, Marsh Street, Widnes age 69 yrs. Widnes Weekly News p. 5, col. 6, June 1898.
Any ideas or help appreciated.
Cheers

I haven't had any experience, but if you can wait until they reopen on Tuesday I'll give them or Widnes Library a ring, more than likely at those dates, hopefully they might be on microfilm at the library.

There might be a local researcher who would do you a search at reasonable rates, with copies, if you would be interested in this, please send me a pm and I'll pass on the details.

Obituaries Widnes Weekly News

Post by egandy »

Thanks for your quick response and generous offer. A couple of typos in my original message. The obituaries in question are:

William Stevens, my gggf, father of Elizabeth Stevens/Gandy/Keeling, died 15 June 1898 at “Van Tromp”, Marsh Street, Widnes age 69 yrs. Widnes Weekly News p. 5, col. 6, June 25th 1898.

Mary Stevens (Lomax), Elizabeth’s mother, also of Van Tromp beerhouse, Marsh Street, died 26th December 1902 age 79.

I'm afraid I didn't understand what you meant by "pm" but if you could find a local person or researcher who could help me with copies I would greatly appreciate.
Cheers
Eric

Hi Eric
I live in Widnes and will have a look at the obituary for you if you want,
looking at index for obituaries it doesnt look as if there was one for Mary Stevens only her husband William. It will be sometime this week if you want me to go ahead.
Cheers Chris
