My late father was in the Kings Regiment and served in Burma.....Looking at some old photographs I have found a small snap of a grave taken in Burma it has a small wooden cross and the inscription reads Pte Jones W.E. Glosters 1.1.44. His tin hat is at the foot of the grave. I dont know if this man was a friend of my dads because he never talked about his time in Burma.

I just thought it quite sad maybe he had family who would want it... maybe a military member might be able to suggest something...Its a long shot but worth a try.

F I had a look on the CWGC website and think this would be him but he died 1.4.1944 according to the site.

Son of John and Florence Maud Jones of Clatterbridge Cheshire
Taukkyan War Cemetery

My friend's father was in Burma with the Kings. He died there in captivity.

It could be that date the photo is quite faded....it doesnt appear to be a graveyard its very overgrown and untidy almost like he has just become a fatality and been buried.Thank you for looking up the details...not sure what to do next ?

According to the cemetery information on the cwgc website the men were reinterred in the cemetery so I imagine your photo was taken of the original grave before he was moved into the War cemetery if you see what I mean.

Perhaps William had brothers or sisters whose children are still alive.

John Jones married Florence Maud Evans at Christchurch Higher Bebington in 1919. Access to the church register might find siblings to William Edwin. You never know they may be still alive.

There are a number of possible siblings but difficult to tell really as Jones/Evans are common names. The parish register would be best.

Perhaps something in the local paper? Just had a ferret and I think the registers may still be at the church.

Will follow that through maybe the local paper would be the answer... its a bit of a coincidence that his name was Jones as my dad was Jones and when he died in 2005 at the ripe old age of 93 ((he was one of the lucky ones to return from Burma albeit he was wounded fixed up then returned to the front)) I did do a little research to see if William was related to the family but didnt find anything.

Anc@@ records also give the date as 1st April 1944.
Born Birkenhead.
In Free BMD Wm E Jones nee Evans is rego'd in Wirral
3rd qtr 1922
Not much help as there are a swag of Jones/Evans in Wirral births after Wm.

Just a thought it might be worth contacting Christchurch in Higher Bebington. If that was the family church someone there may just know something about any brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces.

There is a small memorial plaque in St John's Gardens, Liverpool, in memory of some who fell serving in the Chindits in Burma during WW2, including some King's men. I do not know its history.
