Hello Liverpool researchers! I'm open to any advice on how to find out more about my ancestors.
I found them in the 1841 census on Maghull St:
John Row, 40, born Ireland
Mary, 25, born Ireland
Ellen, 15, born Ireland
Louisa, 12, born England, outside County
Mary, 10, born England, outside County
Ellenora, 7, born England, outside County
Edward, 8 born Lancashire
Elizabeth, 5, born Lancashire
Robert, 3, born Lancashire (my ancestor)
By 1851, it seems Robert has died:
They are at 13 White Street
Mary Roe, Widow, 43, born Ireland "Hawker"
Mary Ann, 18, born Wales, Newport
Edward, 14, born Liverpool
Honora, 16, born wales, newport
Robert, 9, born liverpool
Edward,Elizabeth, and Robert (my ancestor) all left for the US between 1857 and 1866 to Massachusetts.
Any advice on a next step in Liverpool? Where should I look next??
THanks in advance for any help!
The only other clue I might have found is an "Ellen Rowe of Maghull st, daughter of John Rowe " being married June 21, 1841 at St. Peter, Liverpool

Hi Joey and welcome to the forum on behalf of our members.
Good luck with your search, you've come to the right place
from a very warm downunder.
Ages in 1841 ages were rounded off so not always acurate.
Interesting in 1851 births in Wales.

Do you know when your Robert arrived in USA?
Probably in New York before moving to Mass?
Did all 3 sibs travel together?
Sorry about questions.
Have you looked in Castle Garden site?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
This would seem to be the marriage from the online parish clerks site.
Marriage: 21 Jun 1841 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
David Mc Gowan - (X), full Labourer Bachelor of Maghull Street
Ellen Rowe - (X), full Spinster of Maghull Street
Groom's Father: Patrick Mc Gowan, Labourer
Bride's Father: John Rowe, Labourer
Witness: John Cowley, (X); Ann Burke, (X)
Married by Banns by: J. G. Headlam M. A. Curate
Register: Marriages 1841 from the Bishop's Transcripts, Page 121, Entry 126
Source: LDS Film 1068927
What is concerning me is that on the next page to the family you have listed above in Maghull Street, there is all living together, with others also
Patrick McGarvan 20 L Ireland
Eugena 27 Ireland
Ellen Roe 20 Ireland
HO107; Piece 566; Book: 19; Civil Parish: Liverpool; County: Lancashire; Enumeration District: 36; Folio: 44; Page: 31
McGarvan could be an easily made mistake for McGowan and Patrick and David could be related. So it would be difficult to be sure which Ellen was the correct one.
Nearby there is also
Patrick Roe 25 and Mary 20, both born Ireland with children James 2, Joana 1 and Ann Leonard 14 all born in County.
These are worth looking into to see if subsequent censuses give a more specific place of birth.

Caste Garden
Thanks so far for the hints; I hadn't noticed the other nearby Roe, or the "other" Ellen Roe.
As for Castle Garden, I have not my Robert at all. I know the information provided on those old manifests is very small anyway. I think I may have found Edward on a manifest with wife Maria (Bogue) and daughter Mary (or "May") b.1856 traveling july 1857 aboard the "Isaac Wright".
So, they probably all traveled seperate.

Hi Joey,
Wondering if this is your ancestor? I know the year if off slightly according to the 1841 census but I wouldn't be too concerned about that. If this is your Robert the birth cert would give you his mother's maiden name.
Births Jun qtr 1839: Rowe, Robert - Liverpool - 20 - 465.

Row family 1841
I am puzzled!
Looking at the ages in the 1841 census, even allowing for the rounding down of that year, it seems to me that Ellen, who could be aged between 15 and 19, is unlikely to be a child of Mary Row given her age would be between 25 and 29. But she is shown as born in county [Lancashire] so she can't be John's sister? Then there's that 1841 Ellen Rowe marriage where she is of full age. That would make her born abt or before 1820.
Then there is Louisa aged 12. Mary could have been no older than abt 17 when she was born?
So are the shown ages out of kilter? Maybe rounded the wrong way?

Re: well.
My FMP transcription had her born Lancashire. Correction submitted.joey066 wrote:I think the dates in teh 1851 are much more accurate, so Louisa certainly fits. And Ellen _is_ listed born Ireland in 1841 census, so she could be a sister, right?
So Ellen might be John's sister, and if that 1841 marriage is the right one, their father might be a John Rowe.
A brief comment about those births in South Wales...
There was a significant influx of Irish into South Wales in the early to mid 19th century, especially from the southern counties of Ireland, such as Wexford, Waterford and Cork. There were jobs in the mines and steelworks of that part of Wales, as well as the docks of Newport, Swansea and Cardiff etc.
