But I have not been able to find a marriage for a Thomas Williams and Alice
I dont wont to keep sending off for the wrong certificates, do you have any addvice as to where I go from hear.

Edna Williams

Post by dickiesam »

Hello Sue,
A couple of queries..
1) Can you post the names of the witnesses to that 1946 marriage?
2) Do you know if Edna had older [or younger] siblings?
3) Did Edna have a second forename?
4) Do you know where and when Edna died? Her death registration might show her date of birth, not just the year.

Regarding the Edna Williams birth, assuming a Liverpool event, if you print off the list of births from 1912 to 1917 from FreeBMD [specifying Liverpool, West Derby and Toxteth Park registration districts only] you will get the birth maiden names. You can then go down the list, using each maiden name in turn, in FreeBMD search for a marriage of an Alice [maiden name] to a Thomas Williams in the above 3 districts. I'd go back to at least 1890.
If that fails to produce a hit then go county-wide.

But, that said, I would wait until you have her death registration. Might save a lot of trawling. And her parents may not have actually married either.

There is the death of an Edna Cheetham recorded in 1983

Edna Cheetham
Born 27 June 1916
Death November 1984 aged 68

Sefton South Registration district volume 37 page 269

I believe she married at St Thomas Litherland. The above would be the correct registration district in 1984

If the death certificate shows her to be the wife or widow of Thomas Cheetham you have her birth date.

Do you know definitely she was born in the area?

Hello to you both
Thank you so much for this help I really appreciate it.
I know very little of the family, I believe you have the right death for Edna the family lived in Litherland, I had already moved to Wiltshire with new husband at this time.
I think she had a brother but I have no name , on the wedding cert it just has Edna no other name, I am sure she was born in Liverpool.
The Witness at wedding were C Cheetham and Flora Smith, the wedding was at St Phillip Litherland.
Sorry I do not have a lot to go on.
Thank you again for your time and help
kind regards Sue

As you now have a date of birth and know Edna's father's name and occupation your best bet would be to contact the GRO (ring them up) and ask if they will do a search for Edna's birth certifictae with all the details you have.

Edna Williams' birth

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Tina and Sue,
Re that Edna Williams birth in Sept qtr 1916 to a maiden name Cheetham...

An Annie Cheetham married a Price Williams in Sept qtr 1910.
A couple of months before their first anniversary they are at 63 Southey Street, Bootle. He is 29 from Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales and a
plumber/painter. She is 24 from Bootle. No kiddies, yet! I'd say the original spelling of his name was Pryce. Comes from Ap Rees.. 'son of Rees'.

There are 12 Williams nee Cheetham births in Liverpool between 1912 and 1925, including 10 in registered in West Derby, 1 in Toxteth and 1 in Liverpool. Looks like Williams and Cheetham was either a popular 'union' or Annie and Price were rather prolific.

Hi all
I think I have just found Edna mother her name is Alice Blinkhorn she married Thomas williams in Birkenhead in 1912 at Holy Trinity, ( March 1912 Birkenhead 8a 631 )
I also found a brother for Edna William Thomas Williams he was born in 1915 same house as Edna in Everton,
Can you tell me if a copy of this wedding certtificate will be at records office in Liverpool or will it be in Birkenhead.
Thank you all yet again for your time and help I really do appreciate it.

Birkenhead Church registers are probably at Cheshire Record Office at Chester. I would order it either via the form on the www.cheshirebmd.org.uk website or via the GRO.
