So happy to find this forum. I have been researching family for several years. finally went to liverpool this spring and had an amazing time. I work in the ref/local history dept. at a public library in Massachusetts, USA and im lucky to have Ancestry on site. Anyway, my Gaffney ancestors lived at 68 Raglan St around the run of the century (actually from mid/late 1800's through at least 1901). My Great Great Grandfather Peter Gaffney lived there until he came to Massachusetts at the turn of the century while his parents Martin and Catherine had lived there before his birth (all Uk censuses from at least 1871-1901). I would love to see any pics you might have Tina. If you need any help with anything available on Amcestry or anything US related let me know. PJLong - I also found a map of where Raglan St was on the Cherrington family genealogy site if you are still looking:
Map showing Raglan Street
Thanks for keeping this great forum alive. I absolutely loved Liverpool!

Hi Tina
brilliant accidental news. It's either the world is becoming like a village or everything is converging on the Pool of Life.
From Aus. and Mass. finding your husband's family on these pages is incredible.
Keep us posted.

I've pm Dylan, Catherine's mother was a Mary Ellen hawker...
Uncle Vinnie involved in the Gangs of New York & ended up in Sing Sing
The Gaffney's from Garston were tame compared to him.
No wonder I couldn't find Peter & Co in 1911.
Thanks for lovely encouraging post Tony.

brilliant!
This is fantastic. By the way, we ARE coming back to Liverpool in 2011. Every two years we try to take a british isles trip (2007 we did Ireland and Wales, This year we did Liverpool, London and Ireland). I had been wondering what happened to Owen. Peter Gaffney left for the States from Liverpool aboard the SS Commonwealth in 1901 and stayed in Atlantic MA (now Quincy, also basically dockside,a block or two from the Atlantic) upon arrival at the home of his sister-in-law, Mary Cunningham (i assume his wife Kate's sister). The rest of the family (Kate and kids including my great-grandfather Joseph) arrived shortly after aboard the Commonwealth as well. he continued as a Bricklayer/labourer in the states and the family eventually settled in Revere MA area before some family moved to Western MASS in the 30's and 40's including my father Paul (who we call Gaff, naturally). I grew up as an obsessive Beatle fan (though i was born the month they split up, April 1970) and always longed to visit Liverpool, even before I researched the family roots. Now it all makes even more sense as the Scouse is in my blood! So happy to have discovered this site. Any stories. anecdotes, pics, etc are more than welcome.
Thanks Dylan, great stuff
.

Gaffney Research
Not sure if you'll get this, Cousin, but I also live in Massachusetts and came across this board while trying to research more about my great great grandparents, Katie and Peter Gaffney! I've been on ancestry.com and have a lot of the same information. Joseph P. Gaffney is my great grandfather... Joseph E. Gaffney is my grandfather. My mother and I are trying to figure out which part of Ireland Peter and Katie came from. (Parents are Martin and Catherine?) I've love any other info you have to share! It's been exciting finding out what we do know.
Hi Jvenne
Welcome to the forum, so pleased you have found our site.
My Ed's family are Gaffneys.
Martin (Westmeath) & Catherine nee O'Donnell (Mayo) are his gt grandees.
Their son Owen is his grandfather.
Peter's wife Catherine/Kate Clarke, I know nothing much.
All the boys were born in Woolton & Garston.
I've been out all day, home tomorrow when I will write again with more info.
Very very happy to hear from you.
Warmies from a very hot downunder

Looks like they are coming over in 2012, Auntie Nancy still alive and has a boxful of photos etc.
I've reminded them of this link & said we have another new poster.
Will advise reply.

Hi everyone
I've sent info about 3 of the Gaff lads, took me a while but it was an absolute pleasure
and explained about Mary Ellen's....
I'm looking forward to finding out about Peter's family line in USA.
One of the lads, I've never found his marriage so might post in the Lpool forum.
