Lookup please, I'm very confused!!

Post by erika »

Hi All

I am very confused and in need of some help please. If anyone is going to the LRO ( temporary premises ) I would be grateful for a lookup.

I have just discovered my gt grandmother ( Margaret Griffiths ) was a twin, but her sister probably died sometime between her birth in 1845 and 1851 census.
I'd had my gt grandmother's birth cert for many years and it was only while doing my winter housekeeping that I noticed a time of birth on the cert

Naturally I checked for another birth and found a sister for Margaret, cert arrived last week, Elizabeth Griffiths.

However I digress

My confusion is with Baptism.
The girls Margaret and Elizabeth Griffiths were born on 10 Sep 1845
in Edge Hill Place, Edge Hill, to mother Hannah Griffiths nee Bunnell and Samuel Griffiths a joiner.

I had found a baptism for Margaret Griffiths at St Peter's Church Street on the 30 Nov 1845 daughter of Samuel & Hannah Griffiths, Edge Hill Place, Edge Hill, father Joiner
Reg Bapt. 1844 - 1846 Page 355 Entry 2839
I got this information from the Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerk Project.

I have re-checked for a baptism for Elizabeth but nothing showed up.

I then looked on Ancestry and this is where the confusion starts

I found a Christening for
Margaret Griffiths on 20 Sep 1845
Edge Hill
Parents Samuel Griffiths and Anna

Then a Christening for
Elizabeth Griffiths on 28 Sep 1845
Edge Hill
Parents Samuel Griffiths and Anna

St Mary's Church, Irvine St, Edge Hill plays a huge part in my ancestor's lives, burial, marriages etc.
I was wondering if anyone is able to look up the baptisms in their registers please. Unfortunately not on the Lancs project.

The Ref 283 EDG Accession No 3202 Bap 1813-1955

I haven't found a death for Elizabeth Griffiths that I am certain of as there are quite a few between 1845 and 1851, But there are 2. One in the Sep qtr and one in Dec qtr 1845 West Derby.

Sorry this is so long, but the baptisms do seem strange and the names may have been mistranscribed Anna for Hannah. Just need some confirmation please.

Many thanks for reading
Cheers

Hi Susan

Thank you, I have that baptism for Margaret in November 1845 at St Peters.

I was confused as to there being a baptism for Margaret in September and Elizabeth also September although different dates, but seemingly the same parents.
Is it possible that the parents had Margaret baptised twice!! as Elizabeth was probably ill and going to die so were baptised ?

That was the reason for a check if possible to see if they are the same girls as mine.

Cheers

Another possible answer is that there is either a transcription error, or a badly written number and the girls should have been noted on the same date, and that possibly the one in St Peter's is to a different set of parents.

I hope you get an offer to look them up, maybe there will be an address to help identify your family.

Hi Mary

Thank you for reply.
The Margaret Griffiths at St Peters is definitely right, as address and father's occupation are correct. Birth certificate address and later census confirms this.
Also I have a brother of hers baptised at St Peters.

Just hope eventually someone can do a lookup when convenient

Baptism St Mary's Edge Hill

Post by Katie »

Here you go Erika

Date of Baptism 28th September 1845
Name Elizabeth
Parents: Samuel and Anna Griiffths
Abode Edge Hill
Father profession Joiner

I had a look till the end of Sept for a buriel for Elizabeth Could not find one.

She must have took sick and that is why they had her baptised at St Mary's Edge Hill while Margaret was baptised later at St Peter's

Hope this helps

Thank you Katie, that at least solves some of the mystery. The mother's name was Hannah tho', so maybe the registrar didn't hear right!!
Samuel was certainly a joiner.

Think I may send for the death cert I saw registered for Dec qtr. If she died at the end of September or soon after, that's when it would have registered.

Many thanks
