Walter Roberts - ships crew

Post by Philip Roberts »

Hello again,

This may not be the best place to find the answer to my query but you have, somehow, always come up with lots of intelligencia. This time I am trying to find out about my Dad, Walter Roberts. He was born in Bangor, North Wales in March 1903. He married my Mam, Violet Grosart, in March 1922. He never talked very much about his life at sea, simply saying that he sailed from Liverpool, as a merchant ships steward, travelling to America and he said that he had sailed through the Panama Canal.

When he married my Mam he declared that his life as a mariner would be over and they settled down in Hollywell, North Wales and then in Liverpool.

By his D.o.B and D.o.M it seems that he did not spend too much time as a mariner, just a few years.

My question is:- Where would I start to find out more about his antics at sea? I know the info. is very sketchy but it is all that I have at the moment.

Questions like these have been asked before and I've tried to collect a number of links together from suggestions made by some of our forum members.

I knew it - I knew it. There never seems to be anything that beats you. I am not really trying to do that, but it does amaze me what comes to the surface whenever you are asked something. I have not yet explored the sites you have suggested but please accept my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the work you have put in.

Hi Phillip,
Here's another link that might prove useful. Not sure if MaryA already has it covered in her list.

Hi Philip :)
I was lucky to find my Grandad who was a stoker in the Merchant Navy through Ellis Island site (free to join)
From 1918 to 1928.
He worked the Atlantic run during this time.
I put his name in the passenger index & was surprised to find him.
On the manifest he was crew.
I wish you all the best with your search.

Hello all

Had a really hard two weeks with one thing and another, so here I am back

Would Walter have been going away to sea between 1918 and 1921 if so there may be a BT350 card for him this will include a picture of him. This also applies to your Grandad as well Tina.

I am off to London to the Who Do You Think You Are to represent our Society at the end of the month. These cards on on Microfiche at Kew which I am hoping to hit on the Saturday for a few hours if you want me to quickly check to see if one survives then send me a pm with details of their names.
