Going aroung in circles!

Post by Barbara B »

This is by way of a small moan. I decided to have another look at my Hazlehurst side - what a mistake!
Nearly every one of them seem to fall off the planet and disappear from evry census, particularly after they marry. To make matters worse I've got cousins with the same name and the same father's name married within two years of each other and neither of them seem to have had any children. Even the ones I can identify vanish as soon as I look for them. Considering the number of Hazlehursts there were in the 19th century they certainly dwindled in the 20th.
Does anyone else have moments like this or is it just me?
Moan over!

Have you also tried Hazelhurst instead of Hazlehurst since there seems to be quite a number of them.

If you apply and pay, if necessary, for the information on the children at the Bluecoat Hospital the registers give when they were discharged and to what job.

That'll give you an indication of where they were at the age of 14.

I think Mary's idea is good.

You should also check directories for possible connections and marriages both sides of the Mersey.

Have you checked out these marriages? I found them on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk with soundex

Violet HAZELHURST to Joseph FAWLEY 1921 Wavertree St Michael

Albert E HAZELHURST to Phoebe HARDING Gateacre St Stephen 1932

I had a great aunt who married a Hazelhurst or was it Haslehurst or was it Hazlehurst over in Wallasey. Noone ever remembered how to spell the name. I've found it written in 2 different ways in an old address book!

Thanks Mary and Hilary for the helpful suggestions and the two marriages for the orphans!
I've tried a lot of different spellings with not much luck altough I did find one whole branch who had been recorded as 'Hay Church!' The problem is that quite a few of the girls married and then seem to disappear. On top of that the family seem to have favourite names - at least four Madelines and two Arthurs. I'll get them all sorted out one of these days - at least it keeps me off the streets!
Best regards

Hazlehurst etc!

Post by dickiesam »

Thought I had posted these possibles for Violet and Albert... Apparently not, as Hilary's post reminded me....

HAZELHURST, Albert E married HARDING, Phoebe.
Registration District: Liverpool; County: Lancashire.
Year of Registration: 1932; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume No: 8B; Page No: 76.

HAZELHURST, Violet married FAWLEY, Joseph.
Registration District: West Derby; County: Lancashire.
Year of Registration: 1921; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Volume No: 8B; Page No: 517.

EDITED TO ADD:
Also found this 'local' marriage. It is possible Albert had 'lost' the E in his early life.
HAZLEHURST, Albert married SUTTON, Annie V
Registration District: Birkenhead; County: Cheshire.
Year of Registration: 1932; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume No: 8A; Page No: 928.

And this local one with an E:
HAZLEHURST, Albert E married MELLOR, Margery.
Registration District: Warrington; County: Lancashire.
Year of Registration: 1933; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep.
Volume No: 8C; Page No: 521.

FAWLEY, William J - West Derby, Lancs - 1922 Apr-May-Jun.
FAWLEY, Henry - West Derby, Lancs - 1923 Jul-Aug-Sep.

FAWLEY, Barbara - Liverpool - 1933 Jan-Feb-Mar.

Hazlehurst/Sutton:
HAZLEHURST, Albert H - Birkenhead, Cheshire - 1933 Apr-May-Jun.

Hazlehurst/Mellor:
HAZLEHURST, Lawrence I - Warrington, Lancs - 1934 Jul-Aug-Sep.

No births for Haz*/Harding.
