Al the 1st World War service records that survived the bombing in the 2nd World War have been filmed and are on the Ancestry website. If you don't have a subscription most public libraries do and you can see them there.

A quick look shows a Henry Twigg born 1891 a waterman of 101 Rachel Street Liverpool. He has a wife Mary nee Howley and 3 children.

I didn't see John but he may be there.

The estimates of how many papers survived is around 20 - 25% so if you find a family member you're lucky!

John Twigg

Post by dickiesam »

Hello Lemondog,
For the WW2 Army Service records of John Twigg go here:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_rec ... cords.html

From the info you have provided, YoBs etc, I assume you have got the family up to the 1911 Census?

For the crew...
A little background: John Twigg's terrible loss of his wife and most of his children happened on the night of December 21st 1940, when they were caught in the bombing of the Blackstock Gardens air-raid shelter. John was serving with the The King's Own Regiment (Liverpool) when it happened. There's a memorial to the many who died in that one tragedy here:

You can click on the image to enlarge it. Lest we forget..

Blackstock Gardens

Post by dickiesam »

Hi MaryA
I have edited my post to give a better link to the Blackstock Gardens memorial. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_Blitz

And there's more on Blackstock Gardens here, under 1940:

Sorry to be a stickler, but the King's Regiment (Liverpool) and the King's Own Regiment are two separate regiments.
This may help in tracing his service record.

That detail probably means that John Twigg was serving in the King's Own, but was from Liverpool. But clerical work is always subject to error!
