Thomas Roberts 1866

Post by LindaG »

I am looking for information on Thomas Roberts born about 1866, probably in Liverpool, fathers name James. He married Julia Barker (nee Neil) in 1886. Julia remarried Oct 1889 to James Garland and is down as a widow. This is the only info I have from his marriage certificate. Have looked for a death but nothing seems to fit. Strangely enough in Toxteth cemetery there is a Thomas Roberts born 1851 died 1864 aged 13, the address is 9 Southampton Street, the exact address where Grandad Ernest Neil Roberts (Thomas’s son) was born in 1888. I would think the same family yet cannot find the census record with this address. I no longer live in Liverpool so it is difficult for me to look things up in the record office. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Also anyone connected to the Neil/Roberts/Barker/Garland family please do get in touch.
Linda

Hi Linda,
What was Thomas' own occupation and that of his father on his marriage cert and can you post the names of the witnesses please?

Also what church were Thomas and Julia married in?

Welcome aboard Linda and good luck!

D.S
marriage was at St Thomas
Tox Park.
The marr to Garland was at St Cleopas.

Marriage Julia A Neil to George Barker 1882
Tox Park R.O or Reg attended.
Julia A & family in Mann St 1871 which I'm sure
Linda will have details of.
Poor Julia widowed so often.
(there is a death for a George Barker aged 28yrs but it's
Prescot rego 1885)

Do you think that Thomas born in 1866 was named after the deceased Thomas 1864?

Hi All,
Thanks for your quick replies. Yes Tina is right, St. Thomas church. Witness was Edward Garland and Lilly Benn. Thomas ‘s occupation is down as a labourer. His father James is down as a forge labourer on Grandad’s birth certificate and as a Brass moulder on the marriage certificate. Edward Garland was brother of James Garland (Julia’s third marriage) James Garland was actually her step brother as Julia’s father married Ann Garland after his first wife died. I am not sure if George Barker did pass away as Julia lied on the marriage certificate when she married Thomas Roberts saying she was a spinster and fathers name was Peter Barker! I think maybe Thomas might have been named after the other child; this seems to happen quite often in family’s.

Thanks very much. That looks very possible, I don't know how I missed that one. It is difficult when you only have the fathers name. I would love to look up the address 9 Southampton Street to see who lives there.

Thanks to both Dickiesam and Hilary for your information. This means the young boy Thomas who died in 1864 lived there after the Green family, and Ernest Neil (Grandad)was born there between the Brock family and Short family living there. I was really hoping to find the Roberts family still there! so maybe it is just coincidence that a Thomas Robert lived there and Grandad was born at the same address.
