Liverpool Gaol Great Howard Street

Post by bigmama »

I have a chap, Thomas Hill, born 1828 I am trying to find in 1851 as he is not with his family.
I have found a chap who could be him. In 1851 he was in jail but his birth is 1827 and states he was born Liverpool!! so maybe not.
Do any records of inmates exist anywhere?
My chap had a child baptised in Great Sankey 9 Feb 1851 and I would assume he had to be there for that, so malking his stay in jail a recent one to be there for the Census.
On 1861 census Thomas claimed he was born Burtonwood and in 1871 stated Speke.

Any help would be great.

Many Thanks

Jan

Hi Big Mama and welcome aboard!

For the peeps in 1861 Thomas is a blacksmith striker bn
Burtonwood aged 33
wife Elizabeth 30 bn Sankey, Joseph Hill 12, Margaret 10 both bn Sankey.
Joseph is in census after this.

There is a Joseph aged 2 bn Sankey in 1851 living with mother Elizabeth Hill, daughter of James & Margaret Burgess.
Also baby Margt Hill 4 mnths.
Elizabeth is married dressmaker, the kiddies listed as carter's son and daughter.
Thomas must be away working somewhere??

Many Thanks for the help but it hadn't struck me that the children were classed as Carters son and daughter...dozy me!
So it seems that this is my chap.
His daughter was born December 1850 and baptised 9 Feb 1851. Would Thomas have had to be at the baptism to have his name entered i the register as father??

Great, thanks.
So he could have got his wife pregnant and gone to jail!!

Does anyone know of any records that may exist for the prison online or at a records office??

Hi Jan :D
The gang will be able to tell you about records held at L.R.O

IGI have a member submitted entry for Thomas Hill 1829 Burtonwood father John mother Elizabeth/Betty Phazackerley.
Not sure if of any help.
There is a Thos 13 in 1841 farm servant for lady farmer in Burtonwood.

Some of the other prisoners in 1851 born Lancs have Lpool as their birthplace.

Tina,

Thank you.
You are correct about the 1841 census.
His fathers name was Thomas though as I have his marriage details.
I have found one but need to check it out more thoroughly as it is in Childwall and he has stated in various census returns the he was born, Liverpool, Speke and Burtonwood!!
