When in Southport do not miss the impressive war memorial in Lord Street, which you can also see on Google Images.

Visit to Southport

Post by Victoria_30 »

I'll certainly try! I'm a teacher so its probably looking likely I'll get the train down on a Saturday with my Mother. She remembers going when she was very small but I've never been so it'll be nice to see where our relatives once lived and perhaps where some living relatives still are!..I'm fascinated by it and I think I'll do some sort of battlefield tour to see if I can to see Richard Ball Rimmer's name on the memorial and find out more about the First World War really. Thanks again

there are 2 when standing looking at the city hall, on the left [north] is WWI, on the right is WWII. On the south side of the city hall is a walk and the southport record office is there and you could get the marriage cert then used to be 7 quid St Cuthberts will show you the original record book if you make arrangements with the curator/vicar they have a web page. You can also get images on film from you local LDS family history center they have St Cuthberts on 3 films

Certificates from Southport Register Office now cost £9. The office is in the Town Hall side entrance.

If you need other registers as well as St Cuthberts they are at Lancashire Record Office in Preston or as suggested you may be able to order the film in to your local LDS center. If you need Christcvhurch in Southport their registers are not on film and are at Lancashire Record Office.

The Register Office at the Town Hall is not open on Saturdays. You can go in and order certificates but they won't generally do them on demand. It's not a record office just the Register Office.

PS I had a look for Richard on the War Memorial today. If you stand with your back to Lord Street he is in the one on your right nearest to Christchurch. He is listed as R B Rimmer.

Hi Hilary,
I think I'll have to pop down during my half term then, maybe a Tuesday or Wednesday I'll let you know as I want to bring my Mum with me. Its really interesting. I'm really keen to see the war memorial and also do some sort of battlefield tour where I could see his name on the memorial in Belgium?
Thanks again,
