Mary Campbell

Hi
I am trying to find some information out about a lady called Mary Campbell. She was born in around 1801 in Ireland and apparently left ireland around 1848 with 4 daughters and 1 son due to the famine. She was a lady with means and when she arrived in Liverpool she took a house in Pownall Square.

I would really like to establish if she had a husband and what he was called and also if she had any other children. the ones I know of are Bridget Campbell - who married James Reardon, and I previously posted about their some James Jopseph reardon and his double life!, Lucy Campbell, Catherine Campbell and Mary Campbell and Joseph Campbell.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think Marys Husband was Henry CAMPBELL (Bn C1801, Ireland)?

According to a quick Census Search I did on ancestry.co.uk.

Sorry Pegasus, I don't think that's the right Mary in 1851.

There's a son William in the family, bn Liverpool 1941 and they are living at 11 Court, Bostock Street, Liverpool. Not quite up to Pownall Square!

Paxvis, can you put YoBs to the Mary's children you have listed? And did they all come to England with her?

Mary Campbell must have moved in after April 1851...

FISHER, James - Assistant - U/m - 22 - 1829 - Grocer & Provision Dealer - Ireland.

But she didn't stay there long!

HOBSON (?), John - Head - U/m - 27 - 1834 - Grocer & Provision Dealer - Worcester, Worcestershire.
PADNEY, Helen A - Servant - U/m - 17 - 1844 - House Servant - Birkenhead, Cheshire.

RG number: RG09 / Piece:2669 / Folio:116 / Page:38.

So, went back to 1851 and knocked on all the other doors and found a Campbell family. May not be Mary's but she had a son James....

18, Pownall Square, Liverpool.
CAMPBELL, James - Head - Married - 27 - 1824 - Provision Dealer - Ireland.
CAMPBELL, Elizabeth - Wife - 27 - 1824 - Ireland.
VAMPBELL, Philip - Son - 3 - 1848 - Liverpool.
COLLINS, Susan - Mother-in-law - Widow - 60 - 1791 - Supported by her son-in-law - Ireland.
RG number: HO107 / Piece:2179 / Folio:376 / Page:28.

There's 7 other people there, most connected with the provision/grocery trade but not 'by blood'.

There are no Campbells in listed in Pownall Square in 1861.

Thanks DickeSam and Tina, please excuse my questions here, I am still a novice at working all of this out. You have her in 1851 at 2 Pownall Square, but I dont see her on the details you have listed, would I find this on the 1851 census? I have found this morning in 1861 a nathaniel Campbell and Mary Campbell both born Ireland around 1801 living at Vernon Street which is literally down the road from Pownall Sq I believe (its 15 years since I lived in Liverpool though so my memory may be a little sketchy!).

As far as I know she came over with the children:
Bridget Campbell born c1836, Ireland, who married James Reardon in 1857,

Mary Campbell can then be found living with them in 1871.

Lucy Campbell born 1834, Ireland who married Thomas Mulholland in c1858

Catherine Campbell born some time in the 1830's I assume, and as far as this history tells me she came to Liverpool with the family and married a Mr Fennell, however I have been unable to find them, although I do find a William Fennell born 1880, Ireland, who then continues the line to 1915 which I know about, so I assume she actually stayed in Ireland?

Mary Campbell, again this history tells me she married a Mr Cunningham, I did find a marriage of a Mary Campbell to a William Cunningham in 1863 and in 1871 find a Mary Ann Cunningham born 1828, Ireland with a William Cunningham, so I can only assume this is my Mary.

Joseph Campbell born in 1835, Ireland, who married an Ellen Atkinson? and settled in Holyhead.

I now my hisotry has some inaccuracies as it says the son was called Nicholas but then it goes down through the generations until the 1920's with names of daughters and their husbands, and following it backwards, I know he was actually Joseph not Nicholas. Bridget and Lucy are definately correct as I am a direct descendent from Bridget.

Hope this helps and look forwards to fniding out how to gain more information

I also found a James Campbell born in 1836 Ireland staying with the Mulholland family in 1871, so possibly the same James you have identified?

If you check back to the post by Pegasus and my response you will see that family, Henry and Mary Campbell, were not living in Pownall Square.

In a later post I said 2 Pownall Square was occupied by a George Johnston and I had #2 in my head because Tina had included it in her post. My mistake.

Tina's find was in a Street Directory for 1853. It would have been compiled in 1852/53. So the James Campbell in the directory moved into #2 sometime after April 1851 and 1853.

As you see I searched all the listed properties in Pownall Square in 1851 and 1861 and only found a James Campbell [grocer] and his wife at #18 in 1851. If this is Mary's son then perhaps she moved in after the census?

All the census finds I have posted have the census page reference given for ease of finding the people concerned. Hope this helps.

Many thanks for helping explain that. The James Campbell you found was born in the 1820's, the visitor I found in the 1830's so more than likely a different one, plus he is a butcher and not a grocer. The plot thickens!

If you know who some of Mary's children married then perhaps it might be worth sending for one of their marriage certificates. That would give the father's name and occupation and then you could work back to Mary's marriage.
