Herman J. Decker c.1900

Post by daggers »

Can anyone help with an address and occupation of this Liverpool [or district] resident who served as an officer in the Lancashire Volunteer Artllery [forerunners of the Territorials] from around 1900 and is likely to have lived in south Liverpool. His unit was based in Garston until WW1 broke out.

Using the free index to the most recent census, you can enter the reference RD454 and in the Other Members of the Household boxes enter Herman Decker and the family show up in Toxteth Park.

I'm using this as an exercise in trying to match up families with the new Summary Books available on Ancestry. There appear to be 7 people in the house, 2 males and 5 females. There are a number of Decker males (presumably all Heads of household) in Toxteth Park, however only one is listed as having these precise numbers, so I tried the address 9 Marmion Road and it brought up all the listing of those I believed to be in the family.

Try it! But sorry I don't know of any way of discovering the occupation without purchasing the image.

PS Not sure that he and Maud married!

Herman Decker's father Hermann has naturalisation papers listed on the National Archives catalogue in 1862.

As usual, very prompt replies! Thanks very much to both of you. Not surprised that 'cotton merchant' should appear, and an immigrant background, too, as many were. Such was our city's pull for enterprising people in those far-off days.

Hi Daggers, as usual I'm way behind the original post! Do you have details for the family on the 1911 - or do you not need them?

All sorted now, thanks.

Did you have a game of chess there with your coffee, or did they only play in the K in Bold Street?
Those were the days when Russians were traders, not 'oligarchs' and football club owners.

That would seem to explain why there was no marriage to be found in England.
