Usually when that happens though the first one is a private Baptism & then later one to be received into the Church. The ones i've seen that have had that done have had a note added saying either P. (Private) or Received.

Baptised twice

I believe Christchurch, Hunter Street, was RC? If St Peter's was C of E was young Joseph being baptised into two different faiths because it was a 'mixed faith' marriage?

Thanks Dickiesam. I'll do a bit more digging to see if either of them were catholic.

Strange one, usually I would have agreed with Dickiesam's suggestion but http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/churches say that Christ Church, Hunter Street was Church of England and again your own explanation of entries in the Baptism Register since it shouldn't really be done twice.

I can only wonder if one of the families thought Christ Church wasn't as good as St Peter's which was the Parish Church and ended up pushing for a grander celebration.

Joseph was the 6th out of 8 children (that i've found so far) and most of the earlier ones that i've found were baptised in St Peters before him. Strange!!

Christ Church, Hunter Street was definitely CofE. Consecrated in 1800, it was described in 1841 as 'elegant and costly' by the anonymous 'Stranger in Liverpool'.
Registers are at Lpool RO under 283CHR

Christ Church, Hunter Street.

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Daggers,
You have laid a bit of a puzzle to rest. I have school photographs of my father with his class at "Christchurch School" in 1911 and 1915. He lived in Hunter Street and the family were definitely RC, as was his school. I had assumed there was only one Christchurch in the area around Hunter Street. Seems there was more than one!

My Great Great Grandmother Anna Maria Manley (nee Rycroft) was baptised three times.

1st time she was baptised at St Mary's Carlisle in 1857. She then marries Joseph Manley in 1875 and in 1880 she converts to Catholic at St Joseph's R/C Church in Carlisle. The family move to Liverpool in 1886/87 and she is rebaptised at St Francis Xafier in 1890. She is buried in the Church of Engalnd section at Anfield. I have all the documents. No body believes it when I tell them.

Also a while back Mrs. Culling had a unusual query were a set of twins were born, one of them got baptised in a C of E church the other as a Catholic

Baptised Twice

Post by seeker »

As a matter of interest, my wife's G.mother has on her baptism registration of 1898 the words "sub conditione".They think she may have been baptised before. Now has I understand it if a new baby is dangerously ill and may not survive, another Catholic other than a priest may baptise that child.
