I had an Aunt Gertie her real name was Gertrude.

My Great Grandmother was named Mary but called Polly

I wouldn't think Gerty would be a nickname for Mary.

My auntie Gerty was also a Gertrude.

Perhaps there is a Gertrude Mary that you need to check out?

Hi Bernie,
I'd say Gertie is definitely Gertrude. For Ally, the names that immediately come to mind are Alice and Allison. I'd say the former was far more common.

Perhaps you could give details of James - ie date of birth, date of marriage, the census entries you have him on. The crew need to identify which man you are referring to.

Gertie?

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Bernie,
With James Bernard being a sailor Gerty could be in almost any port of call. I'd say she was definitely not a 'relative' unless you can find evidence that Gerty was a 'familiar' term as Tina's example in her post.

With regard to his father, FreeBMD had this:
Deaths Sep 1902> Gribbin, James - 48 - Liverpool - 8b - 15.
And son Joseph:
Births Sep 1888> GRIBBIN, Joseph Edward - W Derby - 8b - 415.

I assume this is James Bernard in 1901?
GRIBBEN, Jas - Member Of Crew - u/m - 18 - 1883 - Ord Seaman - Liverpool, Lancashire.
Address: HMS Anson [1st Class Battleship], Portland, Dorsetshire.
RG13 - Piece:1998 - Folio:146 - Page:10.

I found out that james b gribbin married a mary mahoney in 1913 and died in 1937.could you have a look on 1901 census to see if there was a alice or allison in the family.
thanks again .

I won't bother you again.

Hi Bernie :)
You can bother us anytime mate!!
I did list 1901 in previous page.
Alison is a very new name for this era, I'd be inclined to go with Alice?
There again the tattoos could mean anything as Dickiesam said the name of the ship if he was a sailor??

Use the free index search http://www.1911census.co.uk/

Unfortunately FMP terms & conditions do not allow requests or offers for look ups of the 1911 census. If you have a find on the index above then you can purchase credits to see the original image.
