Hi Katie and Jan, Thank you for your kind responses. I will re-check the electoral register to see if there was an "a" before the entry of his name. I just have my handwritten notes from when I looked at the electoral register. Jan, his address was Anglesey Street, Bootle, and the church was St. James. I have looked at the 1914-1918 website before but will look at it again.
Thank you both again for your interest and help,
Marie

Hi Marie,
The reason I asked for the address was because there was Seaforth Barracks up the road, and a lot of the men would have probably enlisted there or Bootle Town Hall.

I have just had a look at your link Jan and was very interested to see that there were obviously artillery divisions recruiting at Seaforth Barracks. I think that Seaforth would be very close to where my grandfather lived at that time. If only I could find some recorded evidence of his service! Thanks again for your help,
Marie

Have a look at this Marie

Scroll down to V North Western District. 87th RFA were at Seaforth.

Hi Jan,
Yes RFA seems to be used as an abbreviation for the Royal Field Artillery and your link in your second message obviously shows the 87 Field Battery at Seaforth Barracks. Thank you for that. Seaforth I think would be very near for him to have enlisted there. Now just to find that evidence!!

Hi Marie,
yes Anglesey Street in Bootle wasn't that far from Claremont Road in Seaforth (where the barracks were). Anglesey Street was formerly known as Aber Street and the name changed in 1913.
Claremont Road is still there, but sadly not the barracks. If you go to Google maps and have a look for Claremont Road Seaforth, then have a look for Irlam Road Bootle (Anglesey St was off Irlam Road near Marsh Lane, you will see that it wasn't very far from there to get to the barracks, on the corner of Rawson Road
I think Anglesey Street was roughly where Peter Mahon Way is now.

Thanks Jan. I also have two wonderful photos of both the front and back yard view of Anglesey Street courtesy of Crosby Library.

Hi Katie,
Thank you very much for all your effort. I do appreciate it. Do you think he could have changed regiments or do you think he didn't serve abroad if we can't find him in the medal cards? I'm at a loss to know where else to search. Obviously a brick wall! Many thanks again for your help,
Marie
