Ashton & Sarah Ellen Cahill connection

Post by alan donougher »

Sovinah Ashton marries John Joseph Wainwright 1906 Liverpool 8b 113.
James Thomas Cahill had married Sovinah's sister in 1902, Margaret. She had previously been married to a Fitzgerald.
In !901 census, the group had lived in the same house.
Sovinah may have had more children but in FreeBMD Dec 1911 she is listed as the mother of Joseph Wainwright West Derby 8b 656.

My new query is: Does anyone related to the above birth of Joseph Wainwright in 1911 have any knowledge of the circumstances of his aunt Margaret and her marriage to James Thomas Cahill?

Again, a very long shot, but I don't have any easier options.

There is a Thomas Fitzgerald/Margaret Ashton marriage in 1897 - have you checked for a Fitzgerald death prior to 1902 which would surely explain her re-marriage to Cahill?

Presumably Cahill was married previously as there is a 12yr old daughter in 1901 and Margaret was only 24. When did his wife die?

Carole,

Yep ! There is a death for a Thomas Fitzgerald allowing his wife, Margaret to eventually marry James Cahill.

This whole enquiry is based upon the premise that we don't know when James Thomas' Cahills' first wife, Sarah Ellen Williams EITHER died or DISAPPEARED.

The child of that marriage Ellen (or Helen in the 1901 Census) certainly did exist. She was my grandmother.

Sarah Ellen Cahill

Hi Alan,
I have a note of it somewhere, I think, but can you post the Cahill family home address from Ellen's 1888 birth cert? And the given home addresses for James and Sarah at their 1887 marriage as well as the names of the witnesses?

Save doing an extensive trawl...

Sarah Ellen Williams/Cahill

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Alan,
If something odd/strange/bad/'awkward' had happened to Sarah her brother Benjamin would have known what it was and it might be in his descendants family lore. Just wondering if you had thought of tracking them down as well as James Cahill's sister-in-law's descendants?

In 1891 Benjamin is still with his Aunt Sarah [Currie] whose spouse John is a sailor. I think this is Benjamin in 1901 having married in 1898 and he's come up in the world: Marriages Sep 1898: Davies, Florence Harriet and Williams, Benjamin - Toxteth Park - 8b - 463.

1901:
WILLIAMS, Benjamin - Head - Married - 27 - Electrician (Wireman) - Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
WILLIAMS, Florence - Wife - 20 - Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
WILLIAMS, Doris E - Dtr - 0 (7 MOS) - Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
Address: 104 Hawkins Street, West Derby.
RG13 Piece:3488 Folio:10 Page:12

Within a decade it would appear that the baby Doris had died. This is the nearest for her: Deaths Jun 1901> Williams, Doris - 0 - W. Derby - 8b - 397.

But Benjamin and Florence now have 6 sons, including twins, and another daughter. Some of the sons have 'unusual' forenames that might help track them though marriage etc. I would have thought that if something bad had happened to Sarah, one of his two daughters would have had the name?

I certainly do not want to be a wet blanket, BUT!, on the question of Benjamin Williams, I believe in the 1901 Census he was still living as a single man with John Currie and his wife Sarah with whom he had been since 1881. The address is 88 Leta St in the Civil Parish of Walton on the Hill. His first name appears as "Bann"!
RG 13/3454.

Then I believe he appears in the 1911 census married to Elizabeth McBride and has 4 children in the house. This information is posted elsewhere on this site. Perhaps too many different postings ?
Now living at 109 Ashfield St Liverpool. Ref: RG 14 PN 22121.

I hope I haven't posted too many red herrings.
