I am researching this soldier who served with 419 Field Company RE during WW1. From his number, I believe he enlisted between 31 August 1914 and 12 September 1914.
I have him on the AVL as living at 303 Nutgrove Road, St Helens but cannot find him anywhere else; can anybody help please?
For those who are interested, he received a 1914-15 Star, British War medal and Victory Medal for his war time services and was discharged on 3 March 1919.

Between 1910 & 12 he was a boarder at 303 Nutgrove Rd living with a Elizabeth Critchley & Elizabeth Hurst. He was 37 & born in Beverley Yorkshire (if i've got the right one) He was a plumber working in Rainhill Asylum.

Linda, many thanks for that. Interestingly, he is mentioned in 419 Field Company's War Diary as he and a detachment were sent to improve the water supply at a particular army camp.

Hi Mark 
We have to list that particular census as 1910-12 because of rules and regulations about divulging information.
He's in 1881 census (familysearch) with father George & mother, sibs.
1891 he's a plumber's apprentice in Beverley.
Pls let me know if you would like the details.

Linda has really come up trumps! As I said, I thought he was a plumber after finding a reference to a "Cpl Burn" carrying out the plumbing work at an army camp in France in the War Diary. It has to be him as I can find no record of another "Burn" serving in the same unit.
I remember Rainhil Hospital and note that the records, including some staff records, are held at Liverpool Library; has anyone had a look at them?
In 1901, John is listed on the Census return as being resident at the hospital and employed as a plumber. I wonder if he went back after WW1?
Any help is always appreciated! I don't seem to be able to find his marriage or death.

Thank you. I will continue the search. I do know he voluntered for service following one of Lord Derby's recruiting meetings held in St Helens. His name appears in the list published in theSt Helens and Prescot newspapers.
