Legs of Man Public House

Hi all

just heard that a family relative was once the landlord of the Legs of Man Public House - does anyone know the history of this place or where perhaps I could look. The man's name was Herbert Rees

The pub you mean was probably the one on the corner of Lime Street and London Road - demolished in recent years and replaced by an extension to the Empire Theatre.
In 1909 it belonged to Robert Cain & Sons Ltd - the original company of that name, not the present one. The manager was Wm. Geo. Coles. The official address was 2/4 London Road. Source for this: The City of Liverpool Licensing Report Book for 1909.
There is an old photo of the pub and a brief outline of its history in 'A Pub on every Corner', Vol 1: City Centre, by Freddie O'Connor.
There will be more in the Record Office, but you may have to wait until it reopens.

so sorry my information was duff. It should have been that Daniel H Power or Ernest or Douglas Power were the publicans at the Legs of Man.

Oh well will keep trying and will get there in the end. Thanks to all those who helped anyway

Always the start of every girls night out on the town for a cocktail!

I know it's not genealogy but it is in context.....

Being under that 3 legs sign hanging outside the pub nearly finished my wooing of my girl-friend and wrecked the relationship. She was an 'innocent' up from the wilds of Wales to be introduced to my family and I was at the time in the mid-50s working at the Automatic Telephone Company's plant in Lord Nelson Street. I intended taking her out for a night, maybe eats somewhere followed by the flicks, so asked her to come into town and I'd meet her at 6 o'clock under the Legs of Man [sign] having given her directions how to get there from Central Station.

When I arrived at the meet she said that she'd been there for about 10 minutes and in that time more than a couple of men had approached her and asked "How much"! 'What did they mean?' she asked me. I just said they must have been a bit strange and brushed it aside. I had forgotten that spot under the Legs was a fave haunt of 'ladies of the night' and it was only 6 in the evening!

Fast forward 18 months and we were married. And come hell and high water we still are. But I reckon if I had told her the real reason for her being accosted there and then she would have headed back home to her Mum on the next train. I did tell her a while later, like a couple of months, when she suggested meeting me under the Legs again.
