How can I find out if a relative left a will ? She died in 1966 in Bootle. Also she is listed as having died in Bootle - which cemeteries come under that area please? Thank you

If the person was buried in the Bootle area I would contact these people

Thornton Crematorium
Address:
Thornton Garden of Rest

Lydiate Lane

Thornton

Postcode:
L23 1TP

Email:
thornton.gardenofrest@leisure.sefton.gov.uk

Telephone:
0151 924 5143

Notes:
Contact information for Bootle and Thornton Cemeteries

If they were RC they may be in Ford Cemetery. Their registers are indexed and there are copies at Crosby Library

LOCAL HISTORY UNIT CROSBY LIBRARY
0151-257 6401
Email: local-history.south@leisure.sefton.gov.uk
Librarian : Mark Sargant
Assistant Librarian : Andrew Lee-Hart

There are also copies at Liverpool Record Office when it reopens at its temporary home

For wills you would need to search the probate indexes. They are not online. I think for that time you might have to go to somewhere like the Probate Office at the Queen Elizabeth Courts in Liverpool. Both Liverpool and Lancashire Record Offices have copies of the index up to around the 1960s but not sure if they have 1966/7

Wills after January 1858.

Post by dickiesam »

Hi,
This is an abstract from a post by MaryA in the Not Genealogy forum.

"Wills proved from 12 January 1858 to the present day are held only by the Court of Probate. You can access them and buy copies at the Probate Search Room, First Avenue House, 42-49 High Holborn, London WC1V 6NP (tel: 0207 947 6000). You can also order copies by post. The address for requests by post is York Probate Sub-Registry, First Floor, Castle Chambers, Clifford Street, York, YO1 7EA. The same applies to letters of administration, which are granted if no valid will was made or found."

If your flying visit to the UK includes Liverpool, then a visit to Liverpool Crown Court and specifically the District Probate Registry should prove helpful in your search for a possible Will.

The District Probate Registry has a computer, on which you can search their database for Wills (including those proved after 1958 - the Indexes held in Liverpool Record Office only include those proved 1858-1958).

You do not have to make an appointment to use the (one) computer, but bear in mind you might have to wait. Access to FREE.

Hi
If you subscribe to Ancestry.uk Worldwide they now have searchable records from 1868 to 1941. Used it last night and found about a dozen family wills. You apply by application form on the Probate Website and it states a charge of £5 per copy. Dread to think how I will explain to my Bank Manager :D :D
