Dock Labourer / Merchant Seasmen

Post by dlh1 »

Hi everyone.

Some of my ancestors were Dock Labourers during the 1870s-1930s. I was wondering what kind of work this might have entailed and what companies they may have worked for. Is there anywhere online I can look for records on Liverpool Dock Labourers?

Also, Is there anywhere online I can look for Liverpool residents who were merchant seamen? What companies could my ancestors have worked for. I don't seem to be able to find information online anywhere.

Finally. Is there anywhere to look at passenger lists for people emigrating from Dublin, Ireland to Liverpool. I can't seem to find anything online.

I hope someone can help with one of my queries.

Many thanks,

Dan

many dock labourers were employed on a daily basis a few by specific companies. I think it's very unlikely that any records survive.

this gives some ideas of the docks in 1882

For merchant seamen you need to see if their seaman's record survives. this could be at the National Archives kew, Southampton Archives or in Newfoundland. On the www.nationalarchives.gov.uk find the section on research guides and read about merchant seaman as that gives ideas for finding the papers. If you can find the papers it will list the man's voyages then you can look at the Crew lists held at the Maritime Archives but you need to know the ships first. Look on the National Archives catalgue with the person's name and use the letters BT for the section. That will only tell you if they have the papers they are not available online.

There are no passenger lists from Ireland to England as until 1922 people were moving within the UK so were not emigrating.
