I have now received the death cert.
Unfortunately, this doesn't really give me any more clues. (Although it did help with his daughter's married name, as she was the informant)
The one thing that may be helpful, was that he is 56 when he died in 1918, which puts his birth at circa 1862 (on one of the census', it says 1864).
Back to the drawing board!
