Grosart Family - West Derby / Toxteth Park

Post by Troupman »

I am interested in the Family of William Grosart (Sea Captain) and Mary Anne Thompson who moved to Liverpool from Falkirk (Scotland) approx 1875. They had 5 sons and a daughter William, Alexander, Thomas, Andrew, James and Mary Anne.
Mary Anne (the daughter) moved to Chile and died there in 1919. I have information on the family of Alexander but would like to find out more about the others. I would appreciate contact with anyone with any information on this surname, I have undertaken in depth research in Scotland and would like to finish the story by locating information on this branch.
The Grosarts appeared to have strong seafaring links. William who brought his family to Liverpool died at sea when his ship the SS St Mirren was lost in 1881.
I have the 1881 Census return - but nothing in 1891 and 1901. I have a list of addresses in Liverpool for the family that I have from some legal correspondence but have no access to the census locally. Any help would be appreciated

Hello Robert....and welcome!
A quick look finds the family in 1891 at 220 Upper Parliament St, Liverpool.
Mary A. Widow aged 58.
James H. son 24 Builders Bookeeper.
Andrew J, son 20 Druggists Clerk.
This could possibly be Alexander but it's hard to make out the writing....looks like Alser C. son 18 Solicitors Clerk.

Shall have a mooch for 1901.

Many Thanks - that is the family I am looking for. It will be Alexander the son you cant read - Are there just the 4 in the household or was there any visitors etc. I appreciate your help -and your very prompt reply. If you have any Scottish family and need assistance please let me know. If you can find any Grosarts in 1901 I would be delighted.

The census returns are available on a number of paying websites including www.ancestry.co.uk www.findmypast.co.uk (including the 1911 census)www.thegenealogist.co.uk

You may find www.freebmd.org.uk which is free useful and I would also suggest you look at www.lancashirebmd.org.uk which has a number of Grosart marriages listed.

Many people us the Ancestry website in their local libraries. I have had a look at the Glasgow Libraries website and you can get free access to Ancestry in their libraries.

Bimey Robert...I wish you'd been on board a year or so ago! My lot landed in Dumbarton around 1850 from Ireland and progressed to Renfrew (where my Nan was born) before heading down to Birkenhead around 1910.
Good Luck with your searches. The crew on this forum are absolute stars!
