Revisiting John Redding 1840 - 1885

Post by BurscoughLad »

Have just been reviewing the above - my Gt Gfather.

Tina commented that one of his daughters had an "interesting" middle name - Lodge!!

If this was a reference to the Orange Lodge, would this indicate that John was probably born in Ulster rather than the south of Ireland ?

Did (does) the Lodge exist in Ireland outside of the six counties??

Can any one comment please as at the moment, there's no sign of a crack in the wall

Hi

It's more likely a surname that's been in the family that has been added to remember that association.

Hi Blue,

Thanks for posting.

I am really clutching at straws here. Outside Liverpool, they call it lateral thinking!!

So far as I can determine, there is no indication of there being a previous family name connection.

JR married a Sarah Ann Clarke (Father Robert C) in Liverpool in 1860 and I just don't seem to get further back from that

Two sets of census data indicate born Ireland - one of them in Darrow Green (sic) which could possibly have been an enumerator interpretation of Darragh or some such.

As they lived in the Everton area, I suddenly wondered about the Orange Lodge connection. HO hum!!

Thanks anyway

Hi B.L
I agree with Blue, the middle name of Lodge could have come from way way back to remember someone, perhaps Sarah's mother's maiden name not from John's Irish connections?
Didn't he have a wife Jane before Sarah?

Hi!

The Orange Order did exist in the South at the time you are referring to, it was only after partition that it declined. Twelth of July parades were still being held in Dublin in the 1930s. Don't think this will break down your wall but you can always hope.

My lot have a middle name that has been carried down two generations, was the maiden name from the previous generation.

I think you have lots to investigate, but it could be a clue when you are looking for a marriage, if you come across the name you will know it's the right one.

Hi folks

Thx for your comments, Heli and Tina

Tina. Yes, the 1861 census shows JR and Jane at 6 Napier Terrace, Everton, but the marriage took place in 1860 with Sarah.

Wonder if he's a bigamist?? Oooo!! Big skeleton!!!

I guess the way to eliminate that issue is for me to get the 1860 marriage cert.

I have been concentrating on getting back to John's whereabouts in 1851 and 1841, rather than looking at the more obvious anomaly.

Just too impatient to get back earlier!!

My Great Aunt had a strange middle name, Russell, we had no idea where it had come from we weren't aware of any Russells in the family. Tracing the family back through the 19th Century there were a number of people with the middle name Russell. It went back to a marriage in 1793 where the wife's maiden name was Russell.

Sarah A and Jane A

Post by Katie »

John Redding married Sarah A Clarke In the September Quarter of 1860, and their first child was born May 1861. On the 1861 Census for Napier Street John Redding's wife is recorded as being Jane A Redding. Is it not possible that when the enumorator has been filling out the census he mistook the S for a J and the r for a n depending on how John Redding filled out the form.

Thanks Tina. You would'nt believe the errors I have come across on these census entries. Attended a talk a few years back where the speaker explained how birthplaces have been recorded as Liverpool when in fact it was Ireland and so on.
