Flood family Sea Street Widnes

Post by carolynb »

Hi
My Gt Gt Grandmother was Alice Flood I have some details

1871 elizabeth st
1881 15 Grenfell st
1891 ????????????
1901 26 Sea St district St Ambrose
I have never heard of Sea St does anyone know of it ??

James and Alice Flood came from Ireland and I dont know if they married there or Widnes their first child Lizzie was my Gt Grandmother and she was born 1870 in Widnes they are shown on the 1871 census as lodgers in Elizabeth St. They also had three sons Thomas Joseph who both died in WW1 and John who did not marry.

Any help with Sea St or any other info regarding the Flood family would help me.

Lizzie Flood married James Brennan and they lived in Chester St she was registered as Lizzie but is listed as Elizabeth on the census returns

regards Carolyn

If you check the description of the enumeration district - District 9 in this case, it is often helps to identify where unknown streets are.

Walmsley Street, Grove Street, Bedford Street, Moss Bank Street, Mary Street, Little Mary Street, Moss Street, Brown Street, Pleasant Street, Lea Street, Fisher Street, Ellison Street.

I don't know the area but don't see Lea Street, so somebody who does know might confirm or otherwise whether it is there now or not, but using maps.google.co.uk I can see Mary Street, Moss Bank Street and Brown Street so you will be able to get an idea of where the street was, unfortunately using the satellite view it looks as though it is now an industrial area, rather than residential.

No Sea St is listed in my 1930s atlas of South Lancs, but LEA St shows in a small cluster west of Warrington Rd, with Ellison, Fisher & Pleasant Sts, in an area marked Lugsdale. The old LMS railway line north from the St Helens Canal is to the west.

I think you are right Daggers, those streets match those on the Enumeration District sheet where the L of Lea is clearer to read.

Flood family Sea St Widnes

Post by carolynb »

Hi
Thanks it makes more sense to me now Sea St should read Lea St it has been copied incorrect on the census.

It looks as if Lea Street was in Mossbank this also answers another question for me I looked on the 1911 census during the world cup free time but only copied the original and now I am having trouble reading it but thought it said Fisher Street

So she was with her son John in Fisher St Widnes

This site is so good I do thank you all again

If anything on the marriage of James Flood and Alice pre 1871 is available I would love to know
I do know she was Alice Gaghan(dont know the correct spelling) before her marriage and came from Co Wicklow (this from 1911 census)
I dont know if her husband James was from Wicklow I only know Ireland for him

again many thanks

The area of Moss Bank is shown on my map as south east of the group of streets I listed, close to Moss Bank Road, Moss Street, Mary St, and the south end of Brown St.

I see now I am wrong with Mossbank it is Lugsdale. Lugsdale Rd is still there and St Maries Church (now closed ) was the parish Church for that area.

Hi Carolyn
I can confirm Lea St. was in Lugsdale and was demolished in the 1950s.
St. Maries baptism registers contain birth and baptism dates for children you
mentioned also a George Flood son of Alicae and Jacobi Flood, Alices maiden name was Geogehan.George was born on 10 July 1868 and baptised 19 July 1868. If you want the dates for other children just ask.

Hi
Thank for that I would love the other details also are there any godparents names as this may help me We did not know anything about another child,( George) this puts them in Widnes earlier than I thought
I have a marriage on record search pilot for 1865 Naas Kildare for James flood and Alice Gahan the year of birth given is. 1835 for him and 1845 for her but census records here say 1841 for both of them. It gives James Flood and Thomas Gahn as the fathers I think it is worth it sending for the cert now St Maries is out

Hi
You are right both are on on the St Bedes memorial I have more information on Joseph than Thomas
I have also now traced James and Alice back to Ireland with a marriage in 1865 they lived at the time of their marriage in Kilbride Co Wexford which is quite near to the Co Kildare border.
Alice gave Co Wicklow as place of birth in 1911 but James had died by then.

The family name has now died out as the only brother to survive (John) did not marry
My Gt Grandmother Elizabeth Flood married James Brennan so we are all Brennans.
