Mary Jones (olim) Melia

Post by taj1 »

Ive found my Great Uncle's wedding certificate ( Thomas Arthur Jones ) 1916 ,who marries a Mary Melia who was 16 yrs old (he was 22).

Unfortunatley Tom was killed in WW1 in Sept 1918 . So Mary became a widow at 18 . They lived in Vaughan St Liverpool 8 . I checked the electoral rolls for that road ( before the Liverpool record office closed) & it appears that Mary left her home she shared with Tom around 1920.

Does anyone know how I would track her down( records wise that is ! )? Or am I completely barking !

She could have remarried what with being a young widow.

I was thinking that is the likely scenario.

Mary Jones nee Melia

Post by dickiesam »

Hi,
I think it would be worth checking for children to this unfortunate couple. There's this birth:
Births Mar 1917 > Jones, Mary F - [Melia] - Toxteth P - 8b - 250.

There's also this one which is stretching somewhat given that Thomas died the previous September but the child could have been born in the June, or even earlier and registered late.
Births Sep 1919 > Jones, Norah - [Melia] - Toxteth P - 8b - 24.

I think it is probable that Mary married again but it could be a long haul finding it. If you found that one of the above children was born to Mary and Thomas it might be easier to check for later marriages for them. For instance, between 1935 [when Mary F Jones would have been 18] and 1945, there are 2 Mary F marriages in Liverpool and 2 in Crosby.

Mary Jones nee Melia

Following up on Susan's suggestion about siblings.. there's only 1 Mary Melia bn 1900 [+/- 1 yr] in Liverpool in the 1901:

MELIA, James - Head - 38 - Dock Labourer - Liverpool.
MELIA, Frances - Wife - 35 - Liverpool.
MELIA, Hugh - Son - 12 - Liverpool.
MELIA, Mary - Dtr - 1 - Liverpool.
Address: 69/9 Mann Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
RG13 / Piece:3429 / Folio:12 / Page:15.

If this is the right Mary [father's name on marriage cert], then finding the family in 1911 would hopefully produce more siblings especially if what I found next is concerning her brother Hugh.

Couldn't find a marriage but, unfortunately, this looks like a possible match for Hugh: Deaths Jun 1916 > Melia, Hugh - 27 - W.Derby - 8b - 465.

And from the CWGC:
MELIA , H - Stoker 1st Class - SS/108670 - 22/04/1916 - Royal Navy - United Kingdom Screen Wall (SJ. 1293). - LIVERPOOL (FORD) ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY.

So it's the 1911 I think....

Hi Brian & Susan ,

I found a record of Mary's family around 1910-1912 , 1 OAK PLACE ,CLIVE ST LIVERPOOL.

Father was James ( on the wedding cert ) . Mary aged 11 has 3 sisters ,
Winnie 9 , Annie 6 , Norah 4 .

Clive st was just around the corner from Vaughan st & the church Tom & Mary married in .

Thank you Susan , I will await the library to reopen & have a look. Ive got a feeling that Mary F Jones would be baptised in St Malachys.

Thanks Again
