Well, regarding my original Joseph Price problem, I received the Mary Price death certificate for Jan 11 1892, and that looks good. There is a Joseph price in Toxteh Cemetery who died in Toxteth Workhouse in 1895, but his given age at death is at least 10 years older than my target Joseph.

Does anyone know if the listed age at the workhouse is taken word of mouth from the potential inmate? Or did they seek certificate proof themselves?

It looks like I can request the sefton Hospital records for 1895 at the LRO, though it doesn't seem to be on microfilm. I have a week to get down there if Mary's closure message elsewhere holds true (the project is a surprise birthday present for my wife and so won't wait the 12 weeks it's going to take to get the temporary service up and running).

I have a busy week ahead - wish me luck!

Nice sense of humour Steve, and I wish you lots of luck.

I would doubt that a workhouse would go so far as to obtain certificated proof of age, and the truth of answers would depend on whether the person themselves was literate/geriatric etc. or even if somebody else had given the information.

I hope the records give you proof that it was your Joseph ie previous address, or next of kin details.

Ages of deaths in workhouses

Post by Katie »

Hi

MaryA is correct in that ages recorded in Workhouse Ledgers are not accurate they can sometimes be 10yrs out. for example.

I have a James and Elizabeth Fagan dying in the workhouse and they were 20 years older than what they were. The address all matched with what I had.

When a person was admitted into the workhouse they may have been unconscious and people looked a lot older back then. While I am at Liverpool Today I will see what register you need to look in.

Thanks for making enquiries, katie... obviously viewing the records is not as straight forward as I'd imagined. I hope your day down there was productive...
