Marriage look up please - St Anthanasius

Post by Prescot »

Hi,
I have a marriage for Emma Ann Woodhouse to Moses Bullock
Kirkdale, St Anthanasius, Liverpool.
Sept Qtr 1893

I am looking for a marriage for Emma Ann Woodhouse to Joseph Bullock
about the same time in Liverpool.

There are 2 marriages for a Moses Bullock in same year.
Could one really be a Joseph on records?

Can anyone help please.
I live in Canada so not easily checked.

Thank you :?:

There appear to be 2 Moses Bullocks. The one who married Edith Redfern was born 1866 in Derny and the couple show on the 1901 census. The other Moses Bullock shows aged 19 on the 1891 census with a father John. However I cannot seem to find either Moses, Emma or a Joseph Bullock on the 1901 but I did only do a quick search.

Could I ask please what evidence you have that a Joseph Bullock married Emma Ann Woodhouse?

Hello Hilary,

I am researching for a friend. His Grandfather was Joseph Bullock born abt 1883, Liverpool.
His Grandmother was Emma Ann on 1911, Emma A on 1901born abt 1883 Liverpool.
On 1911 it shows Mary Ann Bibby as M-i-L and couple married for 18 years.
Through searching I found Emma Ann Woodhouse as step- daughter to a
Bibby and Mary A Bibby.
So some certain and some guess work so far, sorry I don't have paperwork in front of me at the moment.

Thank you very much

I did see two Joseph Bullocks on census years, and so I guess getting the certificate would confirm the father's name. My Joseph is son of Henry Bullock and did not have a brother Moses although if my memory is correct, the other Joseph did.
Sorry this is vague but have only just started it and not organised.
I will get back to my searching and save.

Any help appreciated.
Thank you again

Thank you very much dickiesam.

My only hope was that it was a mistake and the RO would have a Joseph married to Emma.
Or, give Moses Joseph and then a father and his occupation.

Thank you for your time.

Moses or Joseph Bullock

Post by dickiesam »

The Joseph Bullock shown in the 1901 as married to Emma A (Woodhouse?) was backtracked thru 1881 and 1871.
He was born: Births Mar 1870 - BULLOCK, Joseph Lancaster - W. Derby - 8b - 551.

I think it is quite possible the Registrar made a mistake when completing his marriage returns and wrote Moses instead of Joseph.

I think you need to purchase the birth certificate for one of the children of Joseph and Emma Ann. This will clarify Emma Ann's maiden name.

I suggest you also ask if someone will look up the marriage at St Athanasius for you to find out the father of the bridegroom. If it gives the correct occupation fro your Bullock and fatther as Henry you will know it is yours. By the way how to you know Joseph's father's called Henry. If the marriage comes back as Moses a mariner father John you willknow something is not quite right.

Thank you once again dickiesam and Hilary.

Yes, dickiesam that is how I came to the conclusion of Emma Woodhouse possibly being the Emma married to Joseph Bullock.

Where do I ask if someone can look up the marriage of Emma Woodhouse at St Anthanasius, is there another area?

If it is here, please if anyone can, I would really appreciate it.

Emma Woodhouse Moses Bullock Kirkdale ,St Anthanasius
September Qtr 1893

Hilary, sorry I crossed my friends grandfathers. I only have a possible for Joseph, Emma Ann's was a sail maker, named John. Which agrees with the findings from the 1871 & 1881 census.

Thank you for your help.

If you alter the title of your post to something like Marriage Look Up please if anyone is going to the Record Officethey may be kind enough to look at the actual marriage entry in the parish register. This will give the signatures of the persons concerned so it will be interestingto see how the bridegroom signs.

I would still say your friend needs to get a birth certificate of one of Joseph and Emma's children to see what maiden name is given for Emma.

Hi I am at Huyton and luckily enough they have St Athanauis records on microfilm

24th September 1893

Moses Bullock-21yrs-bachelor-Fireman-14 Goldie Street-John Bullock-Engine Driver

Emma Ann Woodhouse-23yrs-Spinster-35 Walton Lane-George Woodhouse-Steward

Witnesses: John Woodhouse and Mary Jane Bullock

He has signed as Moses Bullock

I think you have to take the advice of the Education Officer and apply for the birth certificate.

Apologies all round! I am now sure the above assumption was quite wrong! Joseph L Bullock is alive and well BUT single in the 1901! He's here with his widowed mother: RG13 / 3439 /81 / 46. Occupations of himself and siblings match with previous censuses.

Has anyone looked at the actual census page for RG13 / 3454 / 113 / 54 ?
My transcription, like everyone else's I expect, shows a Joseph Bullock married to Emma A... And she is the only one I can find. So where is Moses B (a mariner in 1891) in 1901? Is Joseph a transcription error for Moses and he's now a dock labourer?

OK! So no transcription error. What if it is a simple matter that Moses didn't like his name and changed it to Joseph? Both very Biblical names. We are what we choose to call ourselves after all.

Apart from the fact that Joseph/Moses is now a dock worker and no longer a mariner, everything else seems to point to this being the same man. I can't find an Emma Anybody marrying any other Bullock apart from Moses.

Looking back to 1891 and taking note that one of the witnesses was "Mary Jane Bullock"

14 Goldie Street, North Everton
John Bullock Head M 58 Engine Driver Staffordshire
Jane Wife M 49 Ireland
Moses Son S 19 Seas Mariner Liverpool, Lancashire
Mary J daur S 17 " "
Edward son 11 " "
RG12; Piece: 2955; Folio 28; Page 16

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Moses wasn't his Sunday name and he preferred to call himself Joseph.

Good morning to all who have helped on this thread. 9a.m here

We have a marriage cerificate for my friends parents that show Henry for Albert's father and Joseph for Albert's father.

I have Emma and Joseph, alive and well, together, on 1901 and 1911 census.
We know this is correct as two of Roger's Uncles died in WW1 and they are there on the census. Also listed on the Commonwealth War grave site.

Thank you dickiesam and Mary A. ( Will order some certificates)
A Big thank you to you Katie, it is really appreciated.

Best wishes to you all
