Hi Mary,
Nothing in the GRO Marine or consular indexes, 1900 - 1920. Sure of the name? Can't find a census return for any Laabs.

As sure as I can be of the name, he married Margaret Fagan in 1902 and she re-married by that name in 1918.

I know there are no census entries, I'm assuming he was foreign, knew from family stories that he worked "away", I thought it was on ships but maybe I need to check military also.

Thank you for checking guys, your help is as ever, appreciated.

Hi Mary,
I see there appears to have been only one child from the Laabs/Fagan marriage, a daughter Margaret bn Dec 1903 and dd Sep 1904. With no more children and Mgt remarrying in 1918, I wonder was she deserted after the child's death? He's not on outgoing passenger lists but may have been crew.

Occupation on marriage cert? Nearly forgot to ask... how old is he in 1902 and father's name/occupation.

From googling the name Laabs appears to be French.

As yet not got the certificate so sorry no details, have only just found out that it was definitely the right Margaret from her second marriage certificate and so the name got me curious.

I don't believe Margaret ever had any more children, from what the grandchildren can remember.

Tina, I hope the old guy isn't him!!!

Clues...?

A Bertha Laabs married Franz Spranger in Sep qtr 1885:
Laabs, Bertha - Mile End - 1c - 963.
Spranger, Franz - Mile End - 1c - 963.

And they are here in 1891:
RG12 - Piece: 254 - Folio: 103 - Page: 17.
He is aged 33 and is from Austria. She is 29 and from Germany.

Here's another Laabs marriage in Sep 1862 - W Derby - 8b - 607:
Laabs, Dorethy to either Andrews, Joshua or Lowe, John Gray.

And Mary.. I can't believe you just said
Tina, I hope the old guy isn't him!!!
What's wrong with fathering a child at 70? Her being such a young lass makes a difference?

Naughty! smack my hand

Thank you for those clues Dickiesam, not a clue at this stage whether they might be connected but it's definitely an unusual name for England.

The marriage for Dorethy Laabs is to Joshua Andrews (per LancsBMD).

The above looks like a false assumption. The only Laabs I have found so far are German. And, Tina, that Scots 1901 transcription might be in error regarding the sailor's age. To me it's 58, as it has been transcribed by Scotland's People. Compare the '5' with a '6' further down the page. Here's the relevant census page and H Laabs is already married. So, was he a bigamist? Awaiting that marriage cert.....

Thank you for that Dickiesam! Another possible bigamist in my lot yeehaaa!

As this guy is a bit peripheral to my family and the church is known, I'm hoping to get away with out paying for the certificate, so I'm at the mercy of a good soul doing a look up for me. Wait in patience :)

Mary, my Photobucket image has cobbled the page so I/we can't get to Edit etc.
Is it possible for you to wave your magic wand and delete the current image replacing it with this modified image. I've lopped off the two columns on the right, which were blank anyway to make it narrower.

My apologies!
