looking for information about my granddad, he was born in liverpool aug 1911, he married veronica 'toole, they had 8 children james(my dad), mary, henry(known as harry), bobby, william(known as billy), brian, ann and irene, he died aug 1965, what little i do know about him is his fathers name was robert, he had 3 sisters hanah, catherine, sally or sarah, they where sent to a home when my ggrandfather remarried, and my grandad ran away from home to live with an aunt sarah who lived in st helens when he was 14, he was in the army, he had worked at kirkby industrial est munitions factory, he also worked at bootle docks with my ggrandfather.

i would love to know what part of liverpool he was from originally, his mothers name, anything about the aunt sarah he went ot live with, and any information on my ggrandfather.

I think you need to organise your tree, draw it up and enter as much information as you can discover from speaking to older family members.

In particular can you try to find out whether any of the three Hughes sisters were older than William as this might help to find them on the 1911 census.

You seem to be sure that William's birthday was in August, 1911 and that his father's name was Robert, with this information you should apply to the Liverpool Register Office for his birth certificate, which will give you Robert's occupation, the address where they lived and very importantly his mother's name.

This will then give you a good starting point.

Hi Mary :D
I've been "wombating" for Robert with sister Sarah with no luck this arvo, many thanks for your thoughts.

If we could find out when spinster Aunt Sarah died (St Helens? rego) it will give her birth year and we can work from there.
As with Veronica, birth cert is the way to go.

Free BMD have births in sep qtr 1911 for a few Wm's with mother's maiden name.
Chris, have a look, perhaps a surname may jog someone's memory??

avagoodweekend.

I would get William and Veronica's marriage certificate as well as this will give their fathers' names.

Bit of a duplication, see http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=9687
what it was like growing up and working in the area
You couldn't do better than to read through some of our boards, such as this recent one http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=9652 would give you some ideas.

Depending on when your ancestor came from Ireland, it may merely have been looking for work, alternatively there is a lot of reading material both online and in local bookshops about the potato famine, this caused much suffering to many of our ancestors.
