Dean Street, West Derby District, 1851

Can any expert tell me if the road shown as 'Dean Street' in 1851 census ref: HO107/2192 and 'Deane Street' in 1861 is what later became Deane Road, off Edge Lane? And who was Dean[e]?

[There was also a Dean Street off Ranelagh Street, next to Cases Street.]

I thought it might be easiest to compare the location of them both and see if they were in the same place, unfortunately Dean Street isn't listed on the Enumeration District under HO107/2192. Did you find a family that you could give us details of that we can find and likewise do you have any residents, or what did you find in the 1861 census?

The family is Cunningham in both cases.

Hi

looking on an 1851 map of the area Deane St with an E was there then next street Beech St, so i do believe its the same St only now its called Deane Road.

Thanks for the info - it looks as though the Cunninghams were there at the the time Deane Street became Deane Road.

The order of the Enumerator's Walk in 1851 is
Kensington both sides
Kensington Street
Kensington View
Cottenham Street
Denman Street
Coleridge Street and Kensington Terrace
Prescot Road from Beech Street to Parliamentary Boundary
Beech Street
Holly street both sides about 50 yards up one house on each side in Municipal Division
Dean Street

In 1861 he went along Deane Street after Beech Street, so the same place.

1853 Directory has 2 Deane Sts
1 listed as Deane St (Elliot St)
the other Deane St Fairfield.
James Cunningham at 19A.
Also listed are numbers 19B 19C 19E & 19F then the Jewish Burial Ground.

Deane Road is on streetview, might save you a taxi ride

unfortunately the house numbers can't be seen but if the one you are interested in is to the left of the Cemetery then I think it has been rebuilt, whereas many of the others in the street look as if they are the existing ones.

When you do have a look through the railings at the Cemetery. There is supposed to be work taking place at the cemetery to record the MI' David Lewis of Lewis's fame is buried there I think. What with the demise of Lewis's it would be lovely to have a wander around and see the headstones. Too much of our City's Heritage is under lock and key.

Noted! I came across a website by accident which described that cemetery and it mentioned plans for restoration, but I cannot find it now...

Hi Daggers

According to the website it became Deane Road in 1865. If you go into maps look for a map that says C. 2002 this map includes some house numbers. The even numbers are on the cemetery side and the numbers start at the top of the street. There's maps on there for 1851, 1893, 1908, 1927 and 2002 so you can see what has changed over the years.
