Catholic church Marriage/Baptism
Catholic church Marriage/Baptism
I am researching the Daniels family. I have John Daniels marrying Elizabeth Goff in 1807 St Peters Church Liverpool. The only 2 sons I can find with parents John & Elizabeth are William and John, both baptised St Mary the Virgin 1813 & 1816. Was St Peters a Catholic church ? Regards Moya
St Peter's was the Parish Church of Liverpool, C of E, and the one where many couples tried to marry in, we believe going to the extent of "leaving a suitcase in somebody's hall" as a sign they had lived there for the length of time of the banns.
If you believed your family were RC I wouldn't rule out this church.

Both churches are C of E, as is St Mary the Virgin if it's the one in West Derby.

Some Catholics married in C of E churches but baptised their children as RC. I have three Liverpool Irish Catholic couples who were married at St Nicholas C of E Church. This subject was discussed here:-

Thanks for the info, but my research has now gone into free-fall. The family Daniels, Thomas b 1808, Phoebe b. 1811, William b, 1813, John b 1816, all baptised at St Mary the Virgin West Derby, parents John & Elizabeth. The only family with all these names were born in Prescot, and various census record them living in Toxteth, with the sons having various trades. The John Daniels I need to find was a fisherman and on the census records he was born Liverpool. Looks like I won't be able to go further back than "my"John's marriage in 1838. Regards Moya
Hiya Moya
Blustery day hey?
John who married Hannah Hughes in 1838 is a fisherman in 1851/1861 census.
It's his father John who was also a fisherman that we need to find in 1841??
I hope I've got this right!
Tina
added Hannah in Uppr Milk St 1841 with Wm 2yrs, presume John on his boat.

Hi Tina, yes it was a miserable day, in that storm we had a few weeks back a lightning strike ruined all the electrics in the house, most of it has been fixed up except the air-conditioner and I am freezing !! Borrowed a gas heater but that's only good for one room. Anyway, back to the important stuff. I now don't know if John the fisherman's father was also called John or if he had any brothers or sisters. After realising that the family from Prescot was not 'mine' I don't know where to look. I have tried the 1841 but the only John I could find was a bricklayer (as was the Prescot John). I'll keep trying. Regards Moya
Hi Moya
How awful the storm damage?
We were very lucky although in the next suburb they had no power for 3 days.
Poor you!
John's age in census varies.
You may have to send for the marriage cert to get the fathers name.
IGI have a bapt in 1818 to Saml & Penelope at St Nicks.
Another in 1810 at St Peters to John & Ellen.

Thanks Tina, I hadn't thought of the marriage certificate, I'll send for one. The four Daniels children, Thomas, Phoebe, William & John, with parents John & Elizabeth were all baptised St Mary Virgin West Derby. Is it likely that if this family were living in Prescot they would have travelled to this church for the baptisms.
The only John Daniels I could find on the 1841 census in Prescot was 65 and he had a wife Jane and son Peter who had been baptised at the Wesleyan church in Prescot. Moya

Did your John Daniels marry Hannah Hughes? If he did the marriage according to www.lancashirebmd.org.uk took place at St Nicholas Church (ref 2053LP/2/222) You could ask for a look up for the marriage.

Thanks E.O
I hadn't thought to ask for a look up as I wasn't sure about Hannah but looking at census, she would seem the right wife.
