Hi All,
Sorry about the name but I don't know how to change it. :oops:
I am having to start my family tree from scratch as all the paperwork,photos, certificates and all backed up work on the computer were destroyed. (long story) Some I can remember and have been trying to get together again but others I am struggling with.
I am looking for my g.g.gfather and his family in 1891 & 1901 census. I have them in 1881; 38 Blenheim Street, RG11 3598/123 23
Frederick HOOKES 33 b Hanover Germany
Julia w 37 b Cork Ireland
Frederick s 10 b Liverpool
Margaret d 8 b "
Cornelius s 4 b "
Mary d 1 b "
Kate d 1 b "
Now this is where it gets confusing for me, in 1901 census I have their son (my g.gfather) Frederick HAAKE 29, with his wife Lucy 25, and son Frederick (my gfather) age 2 and daughter Lucy age 2mths. The address is poss 93 New Hedley Street, RG13/3409 46 (the address is very feint) I know this is the right family as I have his birth cert which names Fred & Julia. Now I also have the death of Julia in 1909 as Julia HOAKES again this is correct as Fred is informant although her age is given as only 46!! the address on this is 94 Latimer Street. Most of this information had been verified from an old family bible (again destroyed) Now I know Kate (Catherine) died while still a baby but as for names and addresses for 1891 & 1901 I haven't got a clue. :?
I hope this makes sence to you all and any help or suggestion will be gratefully received.

Sorry I should have added that they have a daughter Julia Catherine HOAKES born circa 1884 as she marries Bartholomew CONNOR in 1906 and gives her address as 105 Victoria Square age 22 her father is NOT down as deceased. Thanks.

Can't find a Frederick on the 1901 but got Cornelius aged 24 (fits!) with wife, Annie at 22 Beau Street. He's a Stationary Engine Driver! No kiddies.

Loss of data is indeed a disaster and as Blue70 says regular backups are vital and should not be on the main computer.

I do burn a PAF backup to CD after major changes or additions. But, with especial regard to my PAF program, I have also adopted the practice of backing up after every addition/change/whatever [no matter how small] to a flash drive [memory stick]. It's very fast, convenient, and so simple with modern computers. And flash drives are incredibly cheap these days.

I use another flash drive, somewhat larger capacity, for documents and photographs and transfer to CD at intervals after editing. Edited! Poor taste comments removed!

Good suggestions there from Dickiesam. I would also add that in addition to a complete back up to an external hard drive, if you get a googlemail account www.gmail.com this has a huge mailbox and can be used as a back up also. I send my gedcom file and any important documents there regularly although tend to depend on the large external hard drive for all the census images that can be more easily replaced.

Sorry for maybe preaching to the already converted, but I suppose it never does any harm to bring suggestions to the attention of others.

Thank you all for your help. It should make getting things together so much easier this time round, although I will still visit the records office to get copies of the originals.
Pauline - Yes, that is my lot in 1891, thank you for that, do you happen to have the RG and folio Nos please (cheeky I know) and thank you for G.uncle Connie as well!.

I agree with the back-up advice and I did try and follow that but I'm afraid when it came to getting out it was grab the grandson (age 4) and run! What the fire and water didn't get was sorted into boxes, some to dump & some for storeage, and guess what went where! Anyway the only computer I have access to for now (house, builders & furnishings come first) is the local libary or when I babysit.
