Gosling Family

On the 1861 census 2 sons of this family are Thomas age 11 born Ireland and William age 8 born Liverpool. I think the names have been transposed as on the 1851 census William is 11 months but there is also recorded another Thomas age 8 born Ireland. (1842) I assume this Thomas must have died and the son born in Liverpool was named for him. I cannot find a birth for the Liverpool Thomas anywhere and he does not appear on any further census. The family were in Frederick St in 1851 and in Hornby St in 1861. Does anyone know which churches were in these areas at the time, they were not Catholics, I may be able to find a baptism record for Thomas. Many thanks Moya

Thomas French 40, born Plymouth Devon and his wife Mary 38 (fisherman's wife), born Ireland are lodging with them.

There is a mark after Thomas's name and also a mark after his birthplace, may be the same letters, but I'm unable to make out what it says.

Some clarification please..
The only William and Thomas Gosling children I can find in Liverpool in 1861 are here: RG09 Piece: 2675 - Folio: 46 - Page: 21.
Parents James and Sarah - Address: 31 Sparling Street, Liverpool.

What were the names of the parents of your Goslings and what was their YoB?

Assuming that the 1861 census is accurate if a previous child died, I think it should be the birth of William rather than Thomas (born Ireland) that you are looking for. The nearest is
William Gosling Q3 1851 Liverpool 20 695 - have you checked this one?

You are presumably descended from one of these children, although you say you don't have subsequent censuses, can you give details of which one?

I think the letters after Thomas are Sr for Senior?
He must have been on firewatch on the ships at the dock.

Sorry, can't find the entry you are referring to in 1851, perhaps you could give the reference and the mistranscribed name.

Tina - that's what is transcribed also, could be and if so then young Thomas should be around somewhere.

The actual census page shows GASLIN, so we can't submit a correction. And the enumerator must have been a terrible speller because he wrote Bricksam as the place where born for wife Mary instead of Brixham.

Actually I thought the same, but looked at the options for submitting and chose the bottom one "Variation" and submitted anyway. Remains to be seen if it's accepted or not, they may just chuck it out.

Maybe the family name was Gaslin [as on two census pages now] and got changed down the line?

One of the kiddies from 1851 is Susan.
There's a marriage in 1852 at St Peters for her to Nicholas Thompson.

Another is Charity
Marriage 1859 at St Peters for her to William Daniels.
Just put these to one side for now

I sent one into Anc# for the birthplace & said "I'll let you decide to change it"

Bohemia was one of Ancestry's usual attempts at transcription - not what was written!

Yes I believe it's West Devonshire but unsure about the town.

Thankyou everyone for your replies, especially MaryA who found them on the 1871 census. Thomas Gosling was born in Seaton Devon in 1807. His wife Mary ??? was born in Brixham in 1811, I have guessed that they married about 1830, the eldest child Susan was born 1831. Thomas was a fisherman. My problem is the difference in the sons names and ages on the 1851 and 1861 census. The 1851 was a mess, one of the children's names has been crossed out and it's now illegible, Ancestry.com have that name down as John, but as there is an older child named John, that's hardly likely. On the 1861 the son William aged 8 should be age 11 (born Ireland 1851) I have tracked him on subsequent census so I know I've got the age question right. It's the Thomas age 11 but should be 8 born Liverpool probably about 1853 that I can't find, if I could then I'd know what his mother's maiden name was. I have been unable to find any Thomas Gosling on any census after the 1861, Gosling is the correct spelling of the name. I am tracing the family of the daughter Charity she married a William Daniels and they are the ancestors of my cousin who I'm doing this for. Regards Moya

MaryA. After a lot of trial & error I found the Piece no: 3759 for the 1871 census, but I can't see the Gosling family on page 14. Can you let me know other names on the same page so I can look them up on Ancestry. Thanks Moya
