Hi all

this is twice i have come accross a Test House one in Belmont Rd and now one in Walton..is it a place for the sick ??? does anyone know about these places ???

HI COLETTE, IT'S SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE WORKHOUSE.

MIKE ROYDEN HAS WRITTEN ABOUT THEM IN AN ARTICLE REGARDING POOR LAWS, WORKHOUSES AND THE LIKE.

the lady in the Walton one had a husband who was doing ok and 15 kids so she must have been ill..

the test house was the old Belmont Rd Hospital ,later known as Newsham General Hospital ,knocked down now and a nursing home is on the site called Rowan Garth ,it was next to the The Little Sisters of the Poor convent also knocked down and houses on the site

One of the care establishments on Belmont Road, probably associated with the Little Sisters Of The Poor, was St Joseph's Home. My great grandfather Patrick Holland died there in 1955 aged 75 years old.

I worked for the little sisters on night duty for a few years ,the old people had the very best of everything ,they never went short of anything st josephs home was the little sisters very sad to see it go ,
