ROSE ANN JACKSON (nee McMullin) 1864-1894

Post by alice »

Rose Ann McMullin was my grandfather's first wife, she died on 17th September 1894, shortly after having a miscarriage at 3 months. She was, at the time of her death at:- Arnold House, Lytham Road, Southshore, U.S.D. Her usual home address was 14 Leigh Street, Golborne and her husband William Jackson was present at her death. I thought Arnold House was a school? Was she working there? or was it actually a sort of maternity rest home? I am in London so any help would really be appreciated.

I think "South Shore" might be Blackpool rather than Southport. I'll bring this message to the attention of a couple of our forum members who live in both places and ask their advice as to the whereabouts.

Arnold School is currently at 488 Lytham Rd but was only founded in 1896

This is an extract from http://www.arnoldschool.com/html/StaffV ... _3757.html
Origins

Arnold was founded by Frank Truswell Pennington on 4th May 1896. Known initially as South Shore Collegiate School, the school moved to its present site in Lytham Road when Pennington took over and gradually, expanded the buildings of an earlier Victorian School. He then adopted the former school's name of Arnold House School, which was later amended to Arnold School

I found exactly the same paragraph on Wikipedia, so it would seem that there might have been an earlier school in the same premises.

The school only moved to it's present address at 488 Lytham Rd sometime after 1896.

Prior to then - it was "somewhere else" but it doesn't say where

However - as it was only founded in 1896, it could have been previously located at Arnold House and then moved to larger premises

But - it doesn't answer the question as to what Arnold House was in 1894 at the time of that death

Lytham Rd is a very, very long road, roughly 2 miles long which starts off as a residential area and as it progresses - then becomes a mixture of residential & shops before it terminates at Blackpool Prom

I will give Blackpool library a ring on Tuesday to see if they can give me any info from a local directory

I spoke to a very helpful lady from the family history section of Blackpool Library who told me that Arnold School did take over Arnold House in 1896 but that prior to the takeover - Arnold House was a holiday and convalescent home

Thanks for going to the trouble Carole, that seems to answer the question as to why she was there.

Rose Ann Jackson (nee McMullin) at Arnold House, Blackpool

Post by alice »

Wow!! how hard everyone has been working on my little problem!! I thank you all very much (a very royal thankyou!). I did know Rose Ann was only 30 as I have got her death cert, she had been a kind of "baby manufacturing machine" having so many children in her short life but seems to have been the norm then especially R.C's. I didn't know in which churchyard she was buried - so if I had a picture of the grave that would be wonderful too.
I think we (or rather you) have revealed what Arnold House was before it was a school and it fits in very neatly with the reasons for her early demise and why she was in there............ and for those of you who would like to know - she died of - "Debility following miscarriage 3months - ? S*nicope? " can't read that bit. So she had been convalescing. Poor young girl, but the family she left behind all led interesting theatrical lives which led me to LSWLG.

ROSE ANN JACKSON (nee McMullin)

Post by alice »

Thanks Katie, it certainly looks like that word!
Someone queried whether Rose Ann was born in Golborne? Her father John, was (allegedly) born in Golborne but Rose (b;1864) and at least one of her siblings, were born in SCOTLAND! I did start tracing on Familysearch but found 2 entries for Rose Ann Jackson births with 2 different mothers, so I gave up after that. Sometime later the family returned to Golborne. I have yet to restart investigating the Scottish bit but I have American relatives who would be happy for me to do! Rose Ann was not my ancestor BUT her husband William Jackson was via his 2nd marriage. thanks everyone for your kind help
Alice
