John White
Hi Col,
Just a thought.. but since all the other crew members on that 1861 census page are from places in Cornwall is Patrow a mispelling of Padstow?
And, if you go to the previous page - RG09 piece 4468 folio 18 page 0 i - the ship is the Helen out of Penzance, all of 246 tons, and heading for somewhere I can't read.
I know it doesn't account for the later Prussia entries and there are too many John Whites bn 1828 to find him easily in later censuses. Can you post the census references where you have him in later years?

John White
Hiya
Yes you are proberbly right he must be the wrong John White, in 1861 his wife Ann, was with her folks and her kids he was a mariner in the 1871 so i assume he was away at sea in 1861, found their burials in Toxteth he was John Henry Gustave White.. so its looking like his mother was German maybe ?? his father could have been in the Military.
Think i will ask for a marriage lookup to get dads name..
Thanks

Pätrow, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, Germany
If you look at a map of present-day Germany, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
appears as a state in northeastern Germany, bounded on the north by the
Baltic Sea (Ostsee), on the west by Schleswig-Holstein, on the
southwest by Lower Saxony, on the south by Brandenburg, and on the east
by Poland. The state lies in a fertile plain containing many forests
and lakes and is crossed by the Elde, Warnow, and several other rivers.
Prior to 1934, Mecklenburg borders were not the same as they are today.
Territories which were once the Grand Duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin
and Mecklenburg-Strelitz were united into one State of Mecklenburg in
1934. Then, in 1945, Pomerania, another Prussian province, was split
into two sections. The part west of the Oder River was added to
Mecklenburg, making what is, today, the state of
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Looks like the John White on the good ship Helen 1861 might have been the right man after all.
