I have found a record on Ancestry for a soldier who died in WW1, but only listed as Soldiers Died in the Great War. I can't find a service record for him and wondered if there was anywhere else I can look for him.
It's my dreaded Campbells again and I'm not sure if the record is the right one, but I just found out that he did die in WW1.
The info I have is
Henry Campbell L/Corporal
Kings ( Liverpool Regt ) 8th Battalion
307770
died 6 May 1917 France & Flanders.
Any help and advice greatly received
Cheers
Erika
PS This soldier is mentioned on the Hall of Remembrance in the Town Hall

Henry is on the www.cwgc.org website. This gives a little more information he was a Lance Corporal and tells you which cemetery he he is buried in. There is also some information as to what was going on at the time. It would appear that his family sent know more details to the CWGC as no age or statements such as husband of or son of are given.
As you have his number there may well be a Medal card for him on Ancestry. If there are no service records showing it means his were some of the very many destroyed by bombing in the Second World War.
there may be something in the local paper at the time he was killed. It may be worth a look in the Liverpool Echo or other local paper.
Thank you for your reply, I did find that on CWGC site, but as you say there is no more information regarding family etc. One day I'll get to Liverpool again and spend a week in the Record Office!!

Thank you for your reply too. I found his Medal Card on Ancestry, but there is no additional info on there either. Back to the drawing board

Apart from the Medal Card he is listed on the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 as Henry H Campbell born Manchester.
Don't know if this could be a mistranscription or true.

There are 3 Henry Campbells born in Manchester between 1883 - 1885 and I could never work out why he was born in England when the family lived in Scotland and all his brothers were born there. Now which one should I choose, wish the GRO still did a reference check Has anyone used Manchester Record Office?

The 8th Battalion of the King's Liverpool Regiment were sub-titled the Liverpool Irish and were Territorials.
There are medal cards for other Henry Campbells in the regiment, so you should not bank on this one being the one you are looking for.
There is a website under construction which will give a vast amount of information on Kingsmen, but so far is covering only men from two other battalions: http://www.liverpoolregt.co.uk/Index.html
Do you mean Manchester Register Office where you would apply for a certificate or Manchester City Archives or Greater Manchester Archives who hold parish registers?
Manchester City Archives at the Central Library in the city who hold Manchester City Archives and many microfilms of church records are closed for reburshment. they are due to open at the end of June.
Greater Manchester Archives are in a different building.
You could try writing to manchester Register Officer explaining who you are looking for, who his parents are etc and asking if they can help you. Whether they will or are able to I don't know but it's worth a letter or you could phone them first.
I had looked on LancsBMD for the 3 births for Henry Campbell, but none are listed.
I think I'll give the register office a ring and see if they can point me in the right direction!
However, this week I've had a contact via genes, from Henry's grandaughter.
She has only just started researching and hasn't got much information as yet. I had almost given up hope of there being anyone else.
The sad thing is Henry was killed in WW1 and his wife died the following year and all the children were put in an orphanage in Liverpool. Even worse, the eldest daughter was 13 and was in hospital at the time, she wandered out one night to look for her siblings and was found the next morning frozen to death in a shop doorway. What a dreadful thing to happen.

You need to tell them when you ring the years and the quarters you have found for the 3 Henry Campbells. these are still relevant - the only thing that is different is the volume and page number which are unique to the GRO.
Incidentally if they are not yet on lancashirebmd it is because the fantastic people who do the trabscribing have not done them yet.
Regarding th sad story of the youngest frozen to death if you have a date you should find this reported in the local paper and there would have been an inquest.
