Kirkdale Cemetery - Longmoor Lane

Post by MaryA »

Weather and all other things permitting I will be visiting Kirkdale Cemetery on Saturday afternoon.

If time permits I would be willing to check/photograph any gravestones if you have a request, but I must stress that this would be only if you have a grave reference as I wouldn't be able to roam around searching.

There is a plan and I would need Section Number and Grave reference.

Hi Mary, dont know if you will have time but I believe my Gt Grandmother Catherine Jones is in a public grave (section 5 grave 498) she died on the 1st December 1893. I dont suppose there would be any reference to her but just wondered how these graves are maintained. I have photos of her husband and their family's grave in section 12 but the stone has been laid down. I think her husband must have saved really hard so that a public grave was never used again.
Thanks for your offer and time cheers L.B :)

Mary, Hope not to late with request but if you have time, Sec: 17 Grave 229 C of E - Ada Annie Mellor January 1900. Any info/photo would be great.

Ada was my Grandmother (unknown to me) and only recently discovered.

Hope the weather keeps fine for your visit.

Not gone yet, this afternoon is the plan, although I will be out from about 10.00 am this morning and won't be able to pick up any more requests after that. I have made notes of both your requests and will try my best.

I have to admit to failing I'm afraid. There seems to be no order whatsoever in the numbering of older graves, for example I was looking for 1092 and found 800+ close to 1500's.

Liverbird, Section 5 seems a complete muddle, although tidy and Kebs again although numbering was a muddle I did find 228 but next to it which may or may not have been 229 was grassed over.

The majority of stones didn't have numbers on them so really were of no use for the purposes of locating others.

Many of the older stones in Kirkdale Cemetery have been laid down, luckily most of them face up so at least they can be read, some still standing are aslant and one day will be in the same position. I know people have complained about health and safety gone mad, but while I was climbing over humps and bumps to get to read stones I could understand the necessity for any loose ones not being left standing up.

I'm pleased to tell you that the cemetery is all kept tidy and the grass was recently mowed.

Thank you Mary for giving up your time to look.

It's nice to know that the cemetery is looked after, but sad that so
many have no markers.

Hi Mary, thank you so much for all your effort, it is nice to know that the area is tidy, sadly so many areas are not kept up. A couple of our local ones are now "flora and fauna" areas, just a glorified name for a mess with a book to write in of what you may have seen on the day, i.e butterflys or animals

Cheers L.B :)

I am aware that Allerton Lodge charge £10 per cemetery per year to search for a burial, but wondered what they would say if I already had all of the details and merely wanted to pinpoint exactly where the grave is - after all somebody needs to know this in case it has to be re-opened for a modern burial.

So I telephoned the number which turned out to be a central number for Liverpool Council and was advised that THEY would contact Allerton Lodge for me, and from the details they should be able to send me a map with the exact location shaded in, this might turn up by post or email, they have my details for both.

I'll let you know if what they send is explicit enough to be of use.

Well just to let you know that they have sent me a map of the Section I was looking at and every grave is marked on it including the one I want, which appears to be rather further over than I had been searching - I thought the area was another section.

I will attempt to have another try at the weekend and if it works then it might be worth anybody else enquiring for a numbered layout of where their own grave is.

I can only praise them for the speed that they replied to my enquiry.
