I'm looking at the history of the house my wife was born in. Is it possible to find the name of who lives there now? I know I could go knock at the door and ask, I suppose, though I don't know if I'll feel a bit daft doing that.

If they are registered as voters and have not opted out of having their name published, you should find them in the current electoral register. It used to be in the Municipal Buildings, Dale Street, but better check first.

Okay, thanks for that. Is it available for anyone to look over?

Go on, take a chance and knock.

When I went to Ireland a few years ago I drove by the street where my nan's first husband lived as a child - back in the 1870's. I nearly just took a pic and left but wondered if I'd be spotted since it was a sunny day and windows open so obviously somebody was home.

I knocked and a man answered who told me he had inherited the house from his parents and was refurbishing it, as he was working in the basement he offered to let me look around the ground floor - and take photographs both of the rooms he had finished work on and the other with the old style wallcoverings and furniture.

Obviously the differences wouldn't be as dramatic with a house of more recent age, but be brave and do it.

I would go and knock!
We used to live in a very old house near Clitheroe and a man knocked as his GG GRandad had lived there - I loved learning about the history of my house as much as he enjoyed seeing it!
Looking for Graley, Roseby, Frankish, Wragge/Wragg, Burke, Scott and
Edmondson.

Hi Steve,

You can do an address search on the electoral rolls on www.tracesmart.co.uk

I have found this a very useful site.

If you don't want to do that - knock why not dial up Google Maps which might have a full on picture of the house which I believe you can make a copy of?
I can't do it but one of my sons did it for me - I'm not there to knock and would be too shy to do so anyway.
