rainhill mental hospital 1890-1895

my grandfather died in Rainhill Hospital in 1895. I am trying to determine why he was admitted there.
I am unsure how to access the records if anyone can guide me please.

There may be some records on the National Archives site which holds a database of hospital records. This may point you in the direction of either Lancashire Record Office (Preston) or Liverpool Record Office, 4th Floor, William Brown Street Library.

The Records for Rainhill Asylum are held at Liverpool Record Office under the Merseyside Record Office Collection ref M614 RAI.
