I think you should take up Hilary's suggestion and get the Will, it could mention other family members since the Probate only gives details of the two children who were executors, there is bound to be other relatives mentioned in the full document.

Hi All,

Yes I agree Mary, I need to get the will. However, I've been trying for a while this morning, searching around the web site address Hilary sent but cannot for the life of me find any facility for downloading a form to request the Will! Is it me? I've 'phoned the sub-registry office and can only get an answering machine which tells me to forward all details along with a £5 cheque and it will take 21 working days to complete. Does anyone know if this is the quickest way?

Hi Roy

You can apply for the will from the Probate registry at Queen Elizabeth 11 Courts in Liverpool They order it for you and you can either pick it up or have it posted and it only takes a few days

Try this instead

www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm

Then at the top of the page in the middle you will see I know the deatils of the grant etc click on this then click on application form.

You have to down load the form and fill it in and send it by post so it might be quicker via the QE courts.

Hi All,

I've been out and about this morning trying to throw some more light on the Woodwards.

Firstly, I went to the Queen Elizabeth 2nd Courts, probate dept and ordered Abel Woodwards Will. It cost me £5.00 and the very helpful young lady that served me said it should be posted out to me in the next 3 days and if I hadn't received it within 5 days to ring them.

Secondly, I went to Huyton Library to try and find the marriage of Thomas Corner and Ann Woodward in 1821 (if you remember the Fiche for All Saints Chilwall for that period had 'gone walkies'). Anyway I found it and it does little more than confirm what I already had, bride and grooms name, place of marriage and date of marriage. The only additional information was the 2 witness's. Their names were George Buchanan and Ann ?Donington? (her surname has not been written very clearly). Neither of these names mean anything to me.

Thirdly, I went to St Mary the Virgin Prescot (Prescot Parish Church) where most of the early Woodwards seem to have been born, baptised, married and buried. I don't know if anyone has been to the Cemetery at the rear of the church, but it's massive. I had a look around hoping to find a Family grave but their didn't seem to be any gravestones earlier than about 1850/60 (I was looking for dates around 1812/20). I gave it up after a couple of hours and as I made my way back to the front of the church noticed that the paving stones around the church, front and back are actually old gravestone slabs. I can only assume that the very old grave stone slabs have been used either because they were all damamged or to make more room in the graveyard. The stones dated from early 1700's to mid 1800's. Anyway I found one slab which had a short inscription on it: 'John and Mary Woodward of Sutton' which doesn't actually tell me much.

Anyway, that's where I am. I will let you know the contents of the will when I receive it. As Mary said it may give me some more names of Abel's children.

We're certainly further on than my original posting on Ann Woodward, thanks to all the great help I've had from you guy's.

regards,

Roy Montrose

Hi All,

I received Abel Woodwards will this morning. He left all his personal estate (under £300) to just 2 children, Isaac and Ann, to be divided equally.

There is no mention of any other children although I'm pretty sure he had more but think they must have died young. For example there was Abel who died when he was about 19 years old and Mary who died when she was about 10 months old.

I'm going to have a look at going back another generation from Abel Woodward and Mary Johnson and I'll keep you informed.

Any suggestions or tips would be much appreciated. Thanks again for all your help,

Regards,

Sorry about the lack of information, but it was worth checking wasn't it and cost even cheaper than a certificate. I would suspect that at least it confirms no other children were still living at the time of his death.
