I have a cryptic note from another correspondent which says that he and his brother James owned a coalyard at a junction of Moor Lane, Great Crosby. Apparently (the note says) it later became a funeral directors. This is all the information I have available and I can no longer contact the person who sent me the above.
According to me and every census I have, he was and remained a bricklayer. He was born 1866 and died in 1947. His brother was born 1878, died 1949. I have both brothers census/marriage/births etc. so it isn't necessary for anyone to go trawling through them. James was a ship and house painter according to my census data in 1911.
So.....I know some of the researchers on this site have some directories. Would anyone do a quick look at possible dates? Even if you find nothing it would eliminate some years.
By the way the sun is out and the temperature is about 19. Feel sorry for you in wet England if the BBC weather forecast online is accurate.

Francis Roberts. Coalman?
Thanks for the contributions - just back from a market with some nice cheeses and a male crab....
The address you found Tina, in 1938 is the address on his wife's death certificate which arrived here yesterday and it was there he died so you had the right one - as usual. Moor Lane in 1938 is obviously not where either of them were based. So thanks for that.
Erika - I found your post interesting. The father of Francis was William and he in turn named his eldest son William Francis. I think I'm prepared to believe it could be the same person but I'll have to do some more checking...I also like James being a coal dealer in Breck Rd...
Hilary - I have only my grandfather's cert and he was a bricklayer in that but I do not have his brother's. I haven't looked for wills but I very much doubt if they made them but you are right I really should look.
So my tjanks to all and now to cook the crab
