Hello everyone - looking for Gunning/Nicholls
Reading between the lines of the documents you found I think Eliza Hamilton would be his common law wife, although if Elizabeth had died there wouldn't appear to have been anything to stand in his way - maybe she still had a husband somewhere about.
If Steve became enough interested in those offspring it would be interesting to see what was on the birth certificates.

Hi Mary..
it says Eliza Jane Hamilton Unmarried Wife.. Guardian of child 19 Claribel St Toxteth 1918 that was.
Theres also a letter wanting to know why she hasnt been payed by Army.. for a fortnight.. by W ? Colquhoun saying she is dependant on his brother ??? plus another mention of a Colquoroun on her sons death 1917 Edward Norman Suett.. Present at death was EJ Colquhoun 92 Gwendoline St.
If what Steves mum said she recalls a Elizabeth Edwards living in Macclesfield then it looks like Elizabeth did not die..and thats why he and Eliza Jane couldnt marry...

Hi
I've just received my death certificate for Rebecca Edwards from the Liverpool Register Office. The March quarter 1871 birth of Thomas Nicholson does not have a mother called Rebecca, so back to the drawing board with that one.
The death certificate did corroborate some of the details we've established over the past couple of weeks.
Rebecca's husband was called William. He was an iron Moulder. She died at 5 Littledale Cottages, Knotty Ash on August 11, 1913.
Also, if the 1881 census is correct, there are two daughters to track down - Lucy (born 1878) and Henrietta (born 1881).
PS. For anyone looking to send off for certificates, fees for certificates (including short certificates) are going to be increased to £9 each from 6 April 2010.

Hi Steve.. sorry it was the wrong cert for Thomas but a result for Rebecca..
I found Daughter Henrietta's baptism.
Baptisms: 14 Nov 1895 St Mary, Walton on the Hill, Lancashire, England
Henrietta Edwards - Child of William Edwards & Rebecca
Born: 4 Jun 1880
Abode: 41 St Domingo Vale Everton
Notes: Adult Baptism (Father's) [occupation] Moulder [Entry number duplicated]
Baptised by: F. L. Downham
Register: Baptisms 1894 - 1896, Page 80, Entry 636
Source: LDS Film 1647567
She was baptised when she was a teenager for some reason..I really think her mother Rebecca never married William Edwards.. otherwise we would find their marriage..
1891 Rebecca, Henrietta & Lucy are not at home with William.. and i cannot find them in the Liverpool area.. so maybe a trip to Ireland..
1901 125 Mount Pleasant Lucy Edwards age 21 Domestic Servant b Lpool working for David Creedon a Wine & Spirit Merchant
1901 41 St Donigo Vale Henrietta Edwards age 20 b Lpool working for a Richard Jackson Paint Manufacturer..
this is the address she had when baptised..
now it becomes tricky around 1911-12ish, there is a Henrietta Edwards age 29 at Prescot Road working at a Steam Laundry, all others all work at the same place..
there is a marriage of a Lucy J Edwards to a George Hoffman 1909 Toxteth, around 1911-12ish they live at 16 Park Road and have one son named George born 1911, they go on to have a daughter named Lucy born in 1912,
Birth Lucy Jane Edwards Liverpool 1879, so it could be your Lucy..
I also saw a marriage for Edward Ludden to Henrietta Edwards..in 1912 but checking him out he was born in 1893 and around 1911-12ish he lived in Clayton St.. also in the same street was a Henrietta Edwards born around the same time so he married her..

Amazing stuff Coleen, well done. Really interesting about the baptism, and I think you could be right about Rebecca not getting married.
It's interesting to see that what are now common or garden occupations had domestic servants at the turn of the last century.
I can't imagine there are many Oddbins managers with servants these days.

Hi and welcome.jgunner wrote:Could you tell me more about gunning history as im a gunning trying to piece up from edward gunning b 1928
Is this the Edward Gunning you refer to?
Births Jun 1928> Gunning, Edward - [Cross] - Liverpool - 8b - 81.
And this could be his parents:
Marriages Dec 1927> Cross, Sarah E and Gunning, Peter - Liverpool - 8b - 307.
When you say 'piece up' do you want to go back in time or come forwards?
Might be worth considering starting a new thread?
