I think we need a little more information.Do you have Thomas Foster on any census? If so please post what you have? Do you have a copy of the entry for his marriage? If so please post the information. Do you know what is occupation was? If so please post the information.
Have you tried looking for a possible candidate for your Thomas Foster on such sites as www.familysearch.org or www.lan-opc.org.uk?
If you have what have you found?
Forgot to say how do you know Thomas was born in Liverpool?

thanks for your reply,
i dont have the information to hand at the moment, but i think he appears on the census from at least 1851 with his wife and children living in i think overbury street in liverpool, also here is the entry from the igi index for his marriage
thomas foster and elizabeth jones
st martins in the field liverpool lancs
thomas foster labourer, bachelor of liverpool
elizabeth jones x spinster of liverpool
witnesses constantine mcguire
catherine jonesx
married by banns, with consent such as ther law requires
page 70 entry 210.
as the earliest census was 1841 thomas would have been married by then so still cant find his parents although there are a few thomas fosters birth records on the igi around 1808 how would i know which one is the thom as i am searching for
as for him being born in liverpool i am assum ing thet to be so

Thomas Foster isn't an uncommon name and we really need the information that you have from the census. The 1851 census should give his place of birth on it, also the children's names, which might give clues - ie naming patterns.
Haved you checked for any other Foster family living nearby?
Have you checked for any Wills? not just of Thomas himself, but if you look at others with the Foster name you might find mention of him in a family member's will.
Have you looked at the witnesses - were they witnesses at other marriages of the time? that might mean that they were church members, if not then they might be friends/family.

hello mary,
thanks for your reply, sorry its taken a while to get back to you, but i dident get an em ail to say there was a reply to my post, anyway thomas foster b 1808 give or take a couple of years, appears on the 1851 census with his wife elizabeth and their children. thomas was born in liverpool, civil parish of west derby, county lancashire. his age is given as 44 so that would make him born 1807. his wife elizabeth was also b liverpool in the parish of west derby, they then appear again in the 1861 census, but i couldent find thomas in the 1871census, i found his son john alfred foster living with his mother elizabeth, but, i dont know if thomas had died by then or if they were divorced as i thought it unusual as eliizabeth appears in the name of jones(her maiden name)

Is this the 1861 entry you mean?
1 Minshull Street wine and vaults
Thomas Foster 53 spirit dealer
Elizebth wife 52
Matilda Arden daughter 26
Mary Ann daughter 19
Daniel son 15
John Alfred son 13
Joseph Olwin 11
Margaret Winder niece 10
all bn in Liverpool and there is a servant
If this is your family have you got the birth certifictae of your direct descendant to check the maiden name of the mother? The reason I ask is because at the marriage Thomas is a labourer and now he is a spirit dealer with a servant and they don't necessarily go together. Or do you have marriage certificates for any of his children which will give thewir father's occupation?
Divorce is very unlikely for this time.

I have to agree with Hilary that there's a good possibility that this is a different couple, the occupations are very different and a step by step confirmation of parents by means of the birth certificate of one of the children is essential to prevent going off on a tangent and following an incorrect family.

'Lo tis me again
I can't seem to find them in 1851..
Please can you list the census reference?
Thank you, we can then check the kiddies out compared to 1861.
I'm wondering if Thos (the lic vic) was married before...could explain the 7 year age gap from Matilda??

Foster
Hi
In 1841
There is at Dale St
George Foster age 15 Hatters Aprentice
Margaret Foster age 12
Thomas Foster age 9
Richard Foster age 7
Matilda Foster age 5
No adult at home with them
There is Mary Ann Foster bap St Peters 1842 father Thomas a Hatter mother Elizabeth.
William David Foster Bap St Peters 1845 father Thomas Foster a Hatter mother Elizabeth..& John Alfred Foster Bap St Peters 1848 Father Thomas a Hatter mother Elizabeth..
So all these earlier children appear to have a different mother... Margaret.. i see on the IGI a Richard Foster bap 1833 father THomas mother Margaret.. and two Margaret Fosters bap St Peter 1830 & 1831 Thomas & Margaret as parents..
The only Thomas Foster i can see in 1841 who was a Hatter is with an Ann and two kids John aged 7 and Edward age 5
1851 37 Bridgewater St
George Foster age 24 Licensed Victualler b Lpool
Sister Matilda age 15 Housekeeper..
Then 1861 Matilda is back with her dad..
Who is the descendant from Thomas that you are working on ??? what child..

Hi
heres a break down of all the children
George Frederick Foster 1827 father Thomas mother Margaret
Margaret Foster either 1830 or 1831 two baps with parents Thomas & Margaret
Thomas 1831 Thomas & Margaret
Richard 1833 Thomas & Margaret
Matilda 1835 Thomas & Margaret
James 1837 cannot find his bap
Charles Henry 1840 Thos & Elizabeth
Mary Ann 1842 Thos & Elizabeth
David or Daniel 1846 Thos & Elizabeth
John Alfred 1848 Thos & Elizabeth
Joseph Olwin 1849 Thos & Elizabeth
Elizabeth 1850 Thos & Elizabeth
You say you found John Alfred living with his mother and her name was Jones ?? what census was this on as in 1871 John Alfred is married to Harriet and is a liccensed Victualler no mother with him
1881 The same no mother living with him ...and again in 1891..
I really dont think the marriage you found is correct to Elizabeth Jones.. 1833..Thomas was still having children with Margaret upto at least 1835.
I have a feeling they may not have married..

Foster
Found an article in the Lpool Mercury Newspaper dated 1841..
The late PG Foster Hatter of Dale Street.. he was in the order of Oddfellows and they awarded him a Gold Watch for all his services to the order..
The person who gave him the award was also a P.G so it got me thinking they can't both have initilas P.G..so done some digging on the Oddfellows and they called each other (wait for it) PINK GOATS haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
God knows why some old tradition i guess...
Also a robbery of two White hats from Mr Fosters shop in Dale St 1841
Anyway.. looked for Foster marriages and found a Thomas Foster who married a Mary Stephenson at St Marys Lancaster 1798 occupation a Hatter....
Then found a baptism for a Mary Foster St Nicolas Liverpool 1805 Father Thomas a Hatter mother Mary Stevenson.. abode Lumber St Lpool.
Lumber Street was in front just to the right of Exchange Railway Station round the corner from Dale street..so i am 99% sure Thomas & Mary will be Thomas's folks..
I was thinking the Thomas Foster a Hatter in 1841 at Atherton St who was with a lady Ann.. well she could be his sister in law and he may have just been visiting her..leaving his son George in charge of the shop..I noticed she had two sons John & Edward John was born in Foreign parts.
