Help with finding birth record
Hi everyone,
I have been struggling to find the birth details of my grandfather’s sister so I can order her death certificate. I’m getting in before the certificate price rise next month!! I wonder if anyone can help me out.
According to her 1977 death certificate Christina Mary BARRATT was born on 27th December, 1894 in Liverpool. Here are the details that I have on her & her family that may help.
1886 - Her parents Edward BARRATT & Annie O’CONNOR were married at St Oswalds, Old Swan. Edward was a journeyman cabinet maker and they moved around between Stockport, Manchester & Liverpool.
1889 – Her older sister Elizabeth was born in November and the family were living at 18 Tenterden St, Liverpool.
1891 – The family lived at 4/20 Tatlock St, Liverpool.
1894 – Christina is born 27th December so registration should be 1895.
1899– Her younger brother Thomas was born. Do not have his certificate either so don’t have address.
1901 - The family lived at 5 Brook St, Manchester.
1901 – Her younger brother Edward was born in October and the family were living at 75 Ann St, Stockport.
1911 - The family lived at 5 Rupert Terrace, Garden Lane, Everton Brow. They stayed here from 1911 onwards.
According to the 1911 Census there were 6 children born to Edward & Annie and only 3 of those lived. At this stage I can only find Elizabeth, Christina, Thomas & Edward. If anyone can find details for Thomas and the other 2 missing children I would appreciate that too…
I’m thinking that these details could be birth & death of Thomas.
Birth Stockport - March Qtr 1899 - Volume 8a - Page 39
Death Stockport – Dec Qtr 1901 – Volume 8a – Page 25
Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read this and hopefully someone may be able to point me in the right direction.
Kind regards
Leonie

I wonder....
I got her birth date from her death certificate. I am in contact with her daughter, son and grandchildren who all knew her as Christina but that doesn't mean something else wasn't written on her birth certificate.
It would be funny if it were Mary Catherine because there are so many Christina's in the family now - all named after her.
I have the same stories regarding names on certificates. I have an Eda who when her father tried to register her name was told that he must mean Ada so he agreed and Eda only found out as a teenager!! Also I've been searching for a Bernard for years and it looks like he was actually Benjamin. He was always called Barney, had Bernard on his marriage certificate but on his mothers death certificate he is called Benjamin. I'm assuming his mother liked Bernard but the father registered the birth. The father had a long history of Benjamins in his family so obviously wanted him named after them. I wonder if the mother ever found out!!
Thanks for your help

Thanks Col,
I might try this one. I had found it earlier but discounted it because of the Dec 1894 birth and expecting the registration to be in the March Qtr of 1895. The family may have got the year of birth wrong when they gave details for the death certificate. She may have been born 27th Dec 1895 and her parents were 'with it' enough to have her registered by the 31st Dec 1895. Births would have to be registered within a short time period wouldn't they?
Thanks
Leonie

Thanks Col,
I appreciate you trying to find her for me. Maybe one day I will find it if it exists...
I decided to take my chances on what might be her brother Thomas from Stockport. His birth & death (if I have it right) are ordered and on the way. Perhaps there may be more family clues on these two certificates.
Just when I've learnt to do the reference checking the GRO are stopping the checking at the same time as they have their price rise in April.

My suggestion would be to look for the baptisms - St Oswalds is an RC church and it seems as though the family lived in the same area for a while so probably the place to search.

Thanks Mary.
At the risk of sounding like an idiot - where would i look for St Oswald baptisms? Would it be the mormon site Family Search? I've tried Lancashire Online Parish Clerk and found info about the church but no search facility.

St Oswalds is an RC church and so there are few details online, the place you may find some entries is on the http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/ site, which is obviously not complete as is an ongoing transcription project.
It's not a small ask for somebody to go through a parish register for you, usually when searching for a marriage it's very helpful, I may say even necessary, to give a date or at least a quarter, so I have my fingers crossed.
If you don't have any luck it might be that you could pay a researcher to check it out for you.
