Rising Sun, Burscough St. Ormskirk

One of my ancestors shows up on the 1861 census as a master bricklayer and innkeeper living at this address. Does anyone know if this was an actual inn in Burscough St or was it maybe just the name of a house?

Where there any servants listed in the census?
There may have been a groom as well as a housemaid as a lot of Inn's at this time were a stopover for coach & horses.

As his occupation is given as innkeeper and with a name like The Rising Sun I would say it's very likely to be an inn. You could look for a directory of the time - it would have to be a Lancashire Directory as I don't think Ormskirk produced one of their own. This would then list the publicans/innkeepers and if you man is there I would think it's definitely a public house. You will find Lancashire Directories at Lancashire Record Office Preston. Ormskirk Library very likely has some and they may have local history books which list the Rising Sun and possibly your man.

I have looked on the 1st Edition 6 inch to the mile map of the 1840s for ormskirk but very few pub names mentioned. The 1st edition 25 inch to the mile of the 1890s which is too late for you also has pubs but no Rising Sun but by then it could have changed it's name.

Ormskirk being a market town would have had a great many inns!

On a lighter note...I Googled the Rising Sun and it gave me a list of Chinese Restaurants Ormskirk area...fair dinkum

I've phoned for a home delivery

I went through the Ordnance Survey Maps & couldn't find the Inn.
Popsey if you give us the 1861 details, we may have some luck.

HI, I used to live in Burscough Street in Ormskirk, and with a Surname like Stanley I did a lot of research in the area,In the 1800s there were actually two public houses in Burscough Street,
The Monkey Puzzle which was where Newlands hardware shop is today,and
The Rising Sun which I believe stood on what is now Wheatsheaf Walk

1841 census had 3 locations in Burscough St
Swan Inn
Eagle & Child
R?? Brick? Inn

I'll try and get into 1851 census, perhaps one of the above changed it's name??

Many thanks for your responses. Sorry its been a few days since I checked them out.
The reference for my ancestor on the 1861 is RG9; Piece: 2765; Folio: 21; Page: 40; GSU roll: 543025. No servants registered.
Its unfortunate that no house numbers are used for the Burscough St. entries because then I could have tried to work the location out from current shop numbers . (I live in the area). I have just found the family in 1871 at number 58 Burscough St. which is a lot further up than the location which John suggests. The male head of the household has died so maybe the widow and children moved out of the inn.
John's explanation sounds good. I could check that out at Ormskirk Library. Many thanks for your ideas.
