Joseph Cave

I am looking for an ancestor, Joseph Cave, a cabinet maker. He had a daughter, Margaret, who married in 1866, so I assume he must have been born around the 1820's. I think his wife may also have been called Margaret or Marguerite.

Am I right in thinking you have got this man's name and occupation from Margaret's marriage certificate? If so then you are looking for them both together rather than just Joseph alone which is far more difficult to find.

Please give the full details from the marriage certificate, including ages, addresses and witnesses to assist with the search.

Yes, I got the name from there. Margaret married John Wilcock on 5th November 1866. The witnesses were William Robinson and Eliza Ellen Wainwright. It is a Liverpool certificateXX page 246. They were married at St Nicholas' church.

On the marriage certifictae what was the couple's addresses? Are their ages given? What is John's occupation?

Do you have the couple on census entries? If so please post the entry so we can try and track the family. The only John and Margaret Wilcock in Liverpool I can find were aged 22 and 20 reaspectively in 1871 so doesn't seem as if this is your couple unless they were married very young.

We need all the information you have to attempt to help you

John lived in Queen Street at the time of the marriage and Margaret in Union Street. John was a quarryman. He is listed as a minor and she as full for their ages. I can find them in later censuses but I am looking for Joseph, Margaret's father.

Hi Hilary

In 1891 John bn Old Swan 1849, Margaret Lpool 1845.
They have a niece Eliza CANE 14, I think she is in 1881 with her father Thomas bn 1848 as Cave, he's a french polisher, likely candidate to be son of Joseph??
(1881 Margaret bn 1846 Old Swan, perhaps ditto from John)

The Niece, Eliza, is living with the family, John and Margaret (nee Cave) Wilcock. That is definitely the family as I have that same information. I remembered my mum talking about the Cave family, anyway.
I sent for a birth certificate for Margaret Cave born in 1845, but it is not her as the father was not Joseph. I am going to send for one from 1846 and try that. I have today looked on Ancestry but cannot find any traces of Joseph in the Liverpool area.
The marriage of Margaret Cave took place at St Nicholas's church in 1866, so I assume her father was at least 40 or so. It does not say on the certificate if he is deceased or not so I do not know.

Hi Vivian

Eliza Ann's mother, looks like she died in 1886 aged 38yrs (Margaret Ann) perhaps explains why she's with her Aunt & Uncle.
However, this doesn't help us find Joseph.
No luck either finding Thos bn 1848/9 who could be Margaret's brother.
Their surname is probably transcribed as something weird & wonderful!
The Joseph Cave marr to Mary 1846 is a fizzer.
